Lock Bar Rear Sights on an M1A??

Would a 1983 Springfield M1A have lock bar rear sights on it from the factory?? I've read that SA used USGI parts early on but these sights are WWII. And, were there any quality issues in the 20,000 serial number range?

There was a preban for sale here with lock bar sights. Its probably a throw up as to if the sights were from factory or added later. I can see them using them, but i cant recall any examples.

If your curious about a specific rifle to purchase then youre going to have to see it to know.

Lock bar sight

I have a '78 vintage SAI Standard M1A that has a lockbar rear sight. Had the rifle since it was new.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to get some better pictures tomorrow and hopefully some more info. I'm going to have to do some quick studying on how to know if the lock bars are repo's. I believe the originals should have small closed arrow heads.

It's been my experience that lock bars were commonly used on the earlier SAI rifles. They were cheap parts back then unlike today. Just good business paractice for SAI to make use of them. These pics were from a 86XX rifle and the 20XXX rifle in my personal collection came with them as well. Very early SA and Winchester lock bars had open arrows, I believe.

SAI did in fact ship rifles w/Lock bar set-ups back in the 80's or 90's

Lee/Different may have some input on that

The two SAI's I have owned both had lock bar sights from the factory that were legit. My understanding is SAI bought barrels of them at some point from the government. The military quit using them after WWII.

That is a Winchester cap on the elvation pinion because it has "open" arrow heads. Can't tell on the windage knob because the lock bar covers the arrow heads.

It was not uncommon to find Lock Bar sights on SAinc. M1A's in the 70's and 80's because they were cheap then and because the Garand Collecting Craze had not yet hit. When I stopped at the SAinc. factory on my cross country trip to my duty station at Camp Pendleton in August 1988, SAinc. had two bins of them that would have accounted for about 500 or more sets. I got to pick through them and grabbed ALL the checkered knobs I could find and collector knobs I could afford and wished I could have gotten a bank loan to buy more. Grin.

When we built NM rifles on guns with Lock Bar sights, the rifles' owners usually did not want them after we fitted NM rear sights and would either throw them away or give them to we Armoers IF the Armorers even wanted them and many did not. Even though I at first did not have a normal use for them, I kept them before the Garand Collecting Craze hit. GOOD thing as I found a very few SAinc. receivers and a good many Fed Ord receivers where you could not get Post WWII elevation pinions and windage knobs to work because the holes in the receiver for the pinion or windage knob were off spec so much.

My M1A was purchased new in 1978 with lockbar sights. I left them there till I got my first CMP M1 and then I moved the lockbar sights to the Dec. 44 M1 Garand and put the later rear sight on my M1A (I don't use the iron sights anyway, can't see the front sight very well these days.).

Thanks for educating me on the lock bars.

One more question: Would $1,600 be a ballpark price for a 20,000 serial number M1A in average condition (no functional issues but not a safe queen in appearance)??

2x? You mean 2 thousand or 20 thousand or ???

USGI parts count is always a major.

Fixed my typo. It's a 20,000 range. I'll try to get the owner to break down the parts for me today or tomorrow. I hope a rifle this old would not have newer parts but you never know. Most of my experience has been with Garands and I'm just starting to learn a little about the M1A's. I've had a couple briefly over the years but never dug into them.
