I have been told that the parts SEI made to upgrade the USGI stock rifles to the "CrazyHorse" were of excellent quality. My department has several M14s that will be needing upgrades very soon and one of the people we consulted with spoke very highly of SEI parts. I post this as hearsay, however, but rest assured that the Military seems to be very happy with what they received from SEI.
I think adding a new SEI gas cylider to your build would be totally positive, but I might suggest that if you're going to do that then you should buy the other parts to complete it from SEI, too. Just my .2 cents FWIW.
Also, I think it's pretty safe to say that from a monetary point of view you will have to spend a little more money with SEI to get a "superior" product as compared to the original USGI parts. Their USGI-spec gas cylinders are almost as much as a NIT USGI gas cylinder, but the other parts are more money than original USGI.
So, if you're looking to save money then SEI is probably not a good option. If money is not a concern then I might as well suggest going with SEI's M80HT version of gas cylinder. It's a better product overall.
I have tended to become a USGI-only parts snob recently, but I do realize that metallurgy in 2012 is in many ways superior to that of the late 1960s/70s.
Don't forget though, that as one member here stated so well: USGI parts come with an added touch of awesomeness (or something to that affect).
I have never used an SEI gas cylinder, but would have no qualms against buying or using one if I could not get a very nice GI cylinder. I have used a LOT of SEI products over the years and have been well pleased with them.
I have many SEI components in 2 of my m14's and have been very happy with quality! I have a gas cylinder and piston, very nice in finish and durability.
I have put maybe a 1000 rounds through my rifle and every time I shoot I clean the cylinder and piston, the piston cleans up nicely, the carbon does not seem to stick to it like it does to my other ones.
I have a heat treated SEI gas cylinder I had unitized/welded. Its nice. I have a few of the chrome gas pistons and I like them too. I have yet to try the new radial cut piston though which is supposed to be improved over their standard one. My favorite scope mount and the one I recommend most is the SEI # 2006. I have 2 of those and I love them.

I have owned 5 SEI rifles that were built on 95% SEI parts everything but the TG, Guide rod and Bolt, everything else has been SEI and I couldnt be happier my rifles will always out shoot me, I still own 2 1/2 SEI rifles, M80HT componets is the way to go for years of durability and no worries about ever rusting
that's what I wanted to hear fellas. thank you much for the input. Mike
