Another USGI Stock Question...

If I'm beating a dead horse let me know, but did a search and didn't find everything I needed on said topic...

Anyway, I just picked up a USGI Fiberglass Stock at a gun show and fits my Side Stamp Poly like a glove. Or at least where the heal and forward part of the receiver and the stock meet when I clamp down the trigger gaurd.

Couple of problems though...

1) Between were the heal and the forward part of the reciever snuggly contact the stock there is a gap. From the search I did it seams that this is normal and not a problem, but I think I am going to try to make a shim to create full contact across the reciever. I also plan on adding a dummy kit and the rod will cover this gap. Is this all correct?

2) The barrell end of the stock does not make contact with the Metal Front Band on the rifle which allows the fore arm of the stock to flex slightly. Is there supposed to be a Metal Stock Ferrule on the Fiberglass stock like on the wood ones? Can I put one on to create a flush contact here?

3) My USGI 20 Mag snaps in with ease into my rifle when it is in my old ChiWood Stock, however, you have to slam the mag into the rifle when it is in the USGI Fiberglass Stock in order for it to hold securely. This doesn't seem to big of an issue because everything feeds properly and frankly its not going anywere, but has anyone else run into this issue?

Any and all input/advise/answeres are welcome.

THANKS!!!!

Make sure you fill in the recess where the pin locks the op rod spring guide. Or swap out the pin for a g.i. spec one, which is longer. Good luck with your project, and cheers.

#1- normal, there is a reason it only contacts the stock in those 2 areas-don't shim
#2 - there is a metal piece on the stock under the paint,so stock is GTG-put a USGI front band on the rifle.
#3-normal,not a problem.

canmancan,

Yeah I did a little research about filling the recess. Looks like gluing a pop scicle stick to the stock is the easiest thing to do.

tnw50cal,

Thanks for the input. I'm assuming the USGI front band is thicker than the Poly's?

Yes it should have a metal ferrule on the front of the stock.

The easiest thing to do is fill in the indent in the GI stock, right next to the connector with JB Weld...

But if you choose this route, keep in mind that you will have to do this from now on when you swap stocks. The very best thing to do is fit a USGI connector to your Polytech and be done with it. It's not hard and costs very little to do it right.

Thanks Packing,

Yeah, I've read through Gus's post 1000 times and don't quite have a grasp on wheather my situation is good to go or not. It says in there that "most" Chicom recievers fit USGI stock without modification, but man it really looks like there's not enough contact surface. I dont remember there being a noticeable gap there on my M14 in school, but that was a USGI reciver on a USGI stock. Maybe I'll take some pics, post it, and let y'all decide since I'm still new to all this.
