It's an AMU NM modified rear sight. You would need to drill the hole for the spring and ball or use an SA Inc receiver that already has the hole. The 8 notches give it the 1/2 MOA adjustments with the spring and ball. It's a NM setup, just a different style than the 64tpi base and windage knob. The spring is an extractor spring and usually needs to be cut to fit. I'm not sure about the ball, I think just a small bearing.

(Thread Derail Warning) 82nd ABN, I see you've filed the end of your rear site aperture so that you can crank it in and out without disassembling the whole rear sight assembly. Do you change rear sights fairly often and how well does that work for you? I'm thinking of doing the same mod so that I can switch between my NM rear sight aperture and another one that I've had modified to use with tritium front site (i.e. aperture widened a bit and counter sunk in front to allow in more light). Currently, I have a standard rear sight aperture on my rifle as a compromise for hunting and target shooting.

A little late with this tip: Someone at SA told me that the springs they supply are twice as long as needed. He suggested cutting it into two pieces, with the cut coming one link off dead center - giving you one spring a little longer than the other. He said some guns like the longer and some like the shorter.

Thanks from Zetsumei

That modification is to allow the rear sight to bottom out without contacting the receiver. A side effect is you can remove the rear aperture without disassembly.

I decided to call...

I'm sure many of you are already WELL aware of how great Springfield's customer service is, but they have always treated me like I'm some sore of Jewel Encrusted God :D

I just got off the phone with a rep, I recently upgraded my rear sight to a NM. Now I expect many companies would just say," The NM rear sight is $270 pay now." but instead, my wonderful rep at Springfield said, : "On the model you have, you just need 4 parts to upgrade to a NM rear sight and they will only cost you $67."

Well while trying to install these part myself I broke the elevation knob when I dropped it. I posted here about whether I should trouble SA and see if warranty would cover my error or just live with my mistake and I decided to call.

The new Elevation knob assembly is in the mail free of charge.
