Question about elevation adjustment to zero.

Dialed in my Loaded SA M1A at 100 yards with open sights. From what I read, I unscrewed the screw in the elevation knob, got it loose, pulled out to disengage the teeth, but I noticed when I went to adjust the elevation knob to the proper 100 yard designation the aperture still moved. What am I doing wrong to not get the knob to move freely for adjustment without moving the aperture?

If I understand your correctly, screw in elevation drum was loosened to enable you to rotate drum to whatever number/slash mark and yet the sight rack still moves upward??
Sounds simple enough, but hold your thumb finger on sight aperture in bottomed out position and go ahead and turn elevation drum to desired number. Once you have done that, be sure and snug back the slotted screw for if it is not tightened, sight aperture/rack will drift downward upon recoil. Hope this helps.

Once you loosen the knob, the aperture will move, so you have to hold it in place.

Usually, once you sight the rifle, back your elevation down to zero and count the clicks, so you know how many clicks up from bottom your zero is. THat way you can verify you got it right after re-setting the elevation knob.
