M1A's in calibers other then 7.62N

Does any body have a M1A/M14 in a caliber other then 7.62N/308 Win? I seem to remember Springfield armory showing 243 Win and 7mm-08 in there catalog years ago. I allways thought it would be fun to build one in 358 win, that would be one hard hitting semi auto, or maybe the new 338 Ruger round.

There are a few threads on one being developed in 30-06 and I think 7mm-08. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on the calibers, I haven't been able to keep up lately.

One of the "Guns and Ammo" guys had the M1A they torture tested a few years back rebuilt in .338 Federal, there is a write up about it on the web somewhere.

Yes, at one time SA, Inc. advertized M1A's in .243 Winchester and .358 Winchester.

Awhile back I ran across a pamphlet that came with my M1A when I bought it 30 some years ago. I need to "run across" it again and scan it into the computer.

Met a guy in the mid 90's who told me he had one .243 and if I was interested he would see what he had in it. Now this was a pizza place 60 miles away but I had seen him there every time I had been in the area taking a class so I said OK see you in two weeks. I went back and the whole shpping center pizza place and all were gone. I had read they shot well and were favored by the hunting crowd so I was pissed. I know he restored MOPAR cars but I searched Pizza joints foe a few years and then stopped going to the area when I retired. I have read good things about the .243 and know people that are as crazy about it as I am about the 6.5 family

hi all,

Here in France a lot of M1A are in 7-08 cause it is classified as "civilian caliber" whereas 308 is "military" caliber. Laws are differents for these 2 calibers, and it's easier to get "civilian" instead of "military". Very stupid but true....

Thanks from Gus Fisher and jmoore

I have thought of haveing one done in 7-08 or 260 remington for a while. Maybe I should look more into it this year as most of my current gun projects are completed or very near completion.

The 338 ruger round would make for a very interesting round. What is the case head size? Guess I should look it up.

Mexico has the same problem, ergo the popularity of 38 Super in the 1911 down there.

When I posted 338 Ruger I meant 338 Federal, brain fart. I'm not sure what the case head on the Ruger round is.

I have a 7mm-08 SAI custom shop ordered SuperMatch. I purchased it pre-owned to swap it over to .308, but it's in minty shape, and since the non-.308 calibers aren't seen very often, I just haven't been able to bring myself to change it!

I haven't fired it since I've had it (4 years or so now), so guess it's about time I took care of it. :-)

I'm no spring chicken, so looking forward I thought this over and when I get older a .243 or 7mm-08 or some necked down cartridge with less recoil may be what the doctor ordered. I think anything with an OAL of 2.800 or slightly less would work. For me, I have broken disks and facet joint injury in my neck and serious chronic pain but I don't want to give up shooting or M1As.

(thread derail) I thought civilian ownership of guns was all but forbidden down in Mexico. NPR did a story a few weeks ago about a growing gun rights movement in Mexico in response to the drug violence down there. Despite a few misleading anti-gun type comments by the commentator, the overall tone of the story was supportive of those wanting the right to own guns.

As for 30-06, I think you'd have a problem with the case length. What is the overall length of the .338?

The OAL of the .338 Federal is 2.80, so that would work nicely. That could be a hot round.
