| got my 1st m1a, need advice
it is a sa loaded made in 2005. it shot 2 moa with aussie milsurp at 100yds without a scope, problem is i bought bassett mount and leopold rifleman 3x9 and im not sure if i like it. hoping to get some comments on scope vs irons. i have acsess to range of up to 600yrds, i know this rifle is long range capable but it looks better without scope and i can shoot irons fine. thanks for any thoughts and advice.

Personally, I would probably sell off the mount and scope and put those dollars into reloading equipment, if you don't already reload. If you do reload, I'd start working up batches to really make that baby drive tacks. :)
Either way, 2 MOA with surplus is an awesome starting point. I'd run some quality (safe) ammo through it with irons and keep working on your iron sight accuracy.
Good shooting to you!

Try a box of Federal Gold Medal Match. Then tinker with some handloads. Practice with irons. You'll be the envy of your friends.

Ditch the scope - 2 moa says you do not need it.
And the sight picture is the same at 600 vs 100 yards - just focus on the front sight.

As a suggestion only, would install a NM hooded rack in your rear sight and the hood seems to give a better sight picture plus provides for 1/2 moa adjustment for elevation by rotating hood. Hole is drilled off center to provide that ability. If you would do this, most likely the sight rack edges will need to be polished/filed a bit to give a good tight fit in the grooves in the main sight body. Not a big deal, but needs to be done to get the rack to enter/slide in those grooves. You can also install a lens/magnifier in that hood to give even better image of that all important front sight picture. Scopes on a service rifle are not desireable to me, but certainly are popular with a lot of folks.
As others mentioned, using the issue sights will give very good accuracy once the shooter has learned how to work with them. You have PM coming regarding NM hood rack.

Irons. I can shoot better with them. Less visible wobble and I pay more attention to the fundamentals with irons.
I'll move to scopes when my eyes go bad. Still 20 years away God willing.

I can echo the above comments about retaining the iron sights especially if you have good normal vision. When I got my M1A, because of my declining vision, I ran out and outfitted it with a scope and I hated the rifle. Soon thereafter I had eye surgery that restored my youthful vision. I immediatly removed the scope and mount. I fell in love with my M1A all over again.

Doesn't sound like you need glass for your rifle. Two minutes with milsurp and irons is nothing to sneeze at! Try some really good ammo just to see what you can do. I personally get more satisfaction with good iron sight groups than with glass.
I agree that you should hang onto the scope and mount.

I have a Tanker with a Trijicon TX30 on an M8 Rail but my 22" has irons and I kind of like it just that way for now |

There is nothing more satisfying than shooting tighter groups than the other scoped rifle shooters at the range. Scoped M1As are more awkward and fragile vs an iron sighted model. dozier

You need two rifles. Your current rifle for irons, and an LRB M25 for optics. |

Stay with irons, I never thought I could shoot with iron sights and scoped my 30-06 Mauser and .22. I also have a top eject 94 Winchester I hated shooting cause I didn't have a scope. But after shooting 2 MOA with my M1A when I got It I took the scopes off all my other guns and fell in love with off hand iron sight shooting.
