Scopes give you the advantage at dawn and dusk....gathering light when there is very little to see with apatures. Full daylight and it's all you.

I learned to shoot with irons growing up, or so I thought. Then I enlisted in the Corps & really learned to shoot irons. When I bought my M1A my first instinct was to go irons. Then I noticed how most people on the forums scope them. I decided to get a Bassett low pic mount (which is awesome!) and a 2x Aimpoint. This set up was straight up LETHAL! However it added weight and affected the hsndling qualities of the rifle. It was like a scoped model 94, it just didnt feel right. I am now back to irons & am happy.

I would like to expand on this topic. I do have old eyes and am planning on installing a scope on my M14. I have a sadlak mount, therefore I can shoot iron when I want to. I would like an opinion on a scope. I want to get a scope that will take me out out to 1000 yards when I am ready. I don't have Nightforce or Schmidt Bender money. I was looking to the Leopold Mark V 6.5x20x50 first focal plane. I can get this for about $1250 through promtoive mil/le discount. Any thoughts?

I've put a scope on and taken it off several times and think I love it more every time I do it.
Just lube it up, shoot the heck out of it, and change it around as much as you want.....

The Tactical series Leupold scopes are very good. Best bang for the buck for quality glass IMO.

I wish that I could score one for that price.

I have two of the 4.5-14 X 50 scopes on two of my M1A's. They will never come off. The other two wear ARMS 18 mounts that will never come off.

I like instant gratification/instant adjustment if needed when shooting targets @ 100 yds. or more. I find spotting scopes a PITA to use.

Get yourself a pair of Badger Ordnance rings to go with that Sadlak mount and you'll be set.

I use the medium rings .885 height because I pull the scope all the way to the rear in the rings on the one that has a Sadlak mount on it.

But you could get by with the standard height .823 if you pushed the scope further forward in the rings so there is more clearance from the 50MM objective bell.

The standard height works perfect on the LRB M25 with the 50MM bell end. You ALWAYS want to mount the scope as low as possible.

The MK4 line is teir 1 to me plus lifetime warranty as well. I'm planning a Leupold MK4 3X9X40 in the future on my LRB M25 when she's done. I'm Going with a LWA 483 H6 Stock, 18.5" Standard Barrel & all the SEI Gadgets I can fit on it.

Just like this

Here's my 2 Rifles I have now, both LRBs and sweet shooters. I love the short Barrels, so much fun.

I would get proficent with the irons and then find a nother rifle that you could scope. My only M1A at this point has a scope and thats only because i get 1.25" groups at 200yards and because my Mini 14 is my iron sight gun till i get funds to get another M14 type rifle. The need for two of the same type of rifle is apperent and would be the best choice in this matter.

Another thing about shooting irons is the historical experience, since that is how most shooters learned to shoot the M14.
It's significant that Springfield Armory used a Marine aiming an iron-sighted M14 as its logo.
