First round chambers fine follow up round not fully chambering seems like bolt not closing fully. Checked the ops rod and bolt everything moves smooth. Placed a round in the chamber by hand it doesn't fully bottom. Do you think the chamber needs to be cleaned or somthing else ? After how many rounds should I clean the chamber ?

I advise a thorough cleaning of the bore and chamber after every range or shooting session. Having said that, I doubt most people would ever shoot enough in a day to have a chamber that was cleaned after the preceding shooting session, to be too dirty on the next session that it would cause such a problem.

Your spindle valve may be turned wrong so the gas isn't getting into the system. What looks like a screw slot should be perpendicular to the barrel. if the slot is parallel to the barrel - that's your problem. You need to push it in and turn it so the slot is perpendicular to the barrel.

The problem can also come from the gas plug not being tight and/or improperly sized reloads.

Please understand I am not trying to be critical of you, but I certainly hope you have a chrome lined barrel. Firing 500 rounds over almost a year without cleaning the chamber can leave some deep pits and possibly ruin the chamber of a non chrome lined barrel. Rust will form very easily under the carbon residue in a chamber of a non chrome lined barrel. So, even if you have a chrome lined barrel, I strongly advise you clean the chamber.

Could have bent the magazine lips that hold the rounds in the mag ever so slightly while loading. Magazine may just need to be cleaned. The follower can hang up on dirt, grime, or carbon build up. The spring may have weakened through use. Your SAI mag should have been made by CMI. However I've seen new rifles in gun stores sporting knock off mags. In those cases I imagine somebody swapped them out. I'd order a couple of new CMI 20 rounders and see how they function before I look at anything else.

If you were to place a round into the chamber by hand not closing the bolt should the round sit flush with the chamber or should it stick out a little so the bolt can cover it and extract it ? Just learnig so please be patient with me and Thank You for your help to all.

I am not sure if you understand what it looks like when a cartridge is properly chambered in an M14. The rear of the cartridge should be a little bit below the rear most end of the barrel. It does not go in the extra 3/8" or so (just guessing on the distance as I'm not measuring it) to where the large chamfer or angled area begins. Does this answer your question?

It looks like the rear of the cartridge case does not protrude past the end of the barrel and is actually sticking out less than that. IF so, you are probably good to go, but of course I have to say the headspace should always be checked with the appropriate gages and by someone who knows how to use them.
