Any proofs in that area?? "P" or "M" or ordnance marking?

It's not necessarily "rare", but if there's no date in the right "window" on an SA unit, that's at least unusual and interesting.
I will check again. When I found the drawing number at the top of the barrel I didn't even see the sideways U under it until after I took the pictures and saw it in them, then went back and confirmed that. There is something to the right of the drawing number as I depicted in my sketch but I can't tell if it was a faint/corroded date code or some cryptic code or what. I'll see if I can find more and get better pics if there is anything there.

Thank you for your time and input!

I would leave it alone and you have said you already messed one up and seem to regret it.
The guns stock doesn't have to be re oiled or stripped and redone to look new when its a refurb anyway whats the point?

Thanks from Dougboffl

UPDATE:
I put some oil on the barrel and did more looking at it. Found some additional stampings. Pics attached - 1st shows that there is nothing on the right side (where drawing numbers are usually). The 2nd-5th are of the top half of the barrel, muzzle up, beginning at the right side and rolling around to the left. In the 2nd pic there is what looks like a stock's proof "P" that I had missed before. Also some additional tick marks i had not found before in the other pics.

Yup. Buffalo Arms. EGAD!! I'd entirely forgotten!!

Quite rare, but ironically, they don't command a premium I ever heard of. I guess they have no "charisma" or "following".

I use to stay up to speed on all things M1 Garand. Last ten years have been more of the M14 and AR line.
I do have what appears to be an original save for a couple of parts, a very early back into Korean War production M1 Springfield #42686xx. It has a Marlin barrel which the late Mel Bishop said that's original "don't touch it !"

Thanks from Dougboffl
