Actually I don't have the screw together cleaning kit. Hadn't planned on getting it either. I was following the instructions on CMP's website. It said to use a pen to hold the ejector down. The pen slipped and PING! went the ejector and spring.

Don't feel to bad. I have been looking for a bolt spring in my kitchen for 3 day's.

Similar experience when I first got an M1 and had to replace a broken firing pin. The ejector left for parts unknown........until I moved many years later! It had taken up residence in a box across the basement. In the M14/ M1A, a 30-06 fired case can take the place of the M10 tool but you need a pin-punch and a block of wood or plastic mallet to drive out the extractor from below. With the M1, you'll be stuck with the M10 tool or a GI/ Brownell's bolt tool. There's a sticky around here someplace about that.
