| First M1 Garand Match ... Wow!
Hey I just shot my first M1 Garand match last week. Course of Fire: CMP Course "A", 300 point aggregate fired at 200 yards. I used my 1955 Springfield M1 CMP Service Grade and shot a 250-3 out of 300. I actually did better on rapid-fire prone (87-2) than slow-fire prone (86-1); weird. Standing was 77-0, and was difficult and somewhat frustrating (but still fun!).
I was told I did well for my first time. But more than the score, that was FUN! I'll be doing that, and more, again!

Great shooting, and I think the Post Korean War M1's are probably the best made, due to having all of the latest design improvements as well as peace time production. Enjoy that fine rifle!!!

Excellent job man and I'm glad to see another new guy like me competing. I just completed my first NRA Service Rifle match last weekend and shot 421 out of 500. I am going to shoot with my 55' M1 Sunday! Next time get some pictures to share with us! Good job and keep goin'!

Good deal and glad you had fun! :)
"I actually did better on rapid-fire prone (87-2) than slow-fire prone (86-1); weird."
I see that all the time, you're "fussing" your slow fire shots, trying too hard to get it perfect, all shots should go down range at a riflemans cadence (1 per breath), the only time you don't is to shift NPOA between targets or adjust for wrong NPOA or getting knocked out of a poor position. Give em hell! :)...O.L.

I know it's a different rifle, but a few weeks ago at Camp Perry, the winner of the '03 Springfield match shot a 297 out of a possible 300, and scored a perfect 100 in offhand!!!! WOW, what some shooting. And the guy is 61 years old, so there goes my excuse for getting older and shooting worse... |

It was Dennis DeMille and he is 46. He is the General Manager of Creedmoor Sports, Makers of world famous Hardback coats for rifle competition. I was on target 9, and he was on 8 of the same relay. He dropped 2 points in prone slowfire, 1 in rapid fire, and went clean in the standing slowfire. There are a few Youtube videos featuring Dennis DeMille. Creedmoor Sports in conjunction with the CMP created the Eastern/Western Games Creedmoor Cup matches in 2007, and is a huge supporter of the M1 for Vets project.
Go to the CMP website for more details of the Western Games/Creedmoor Cup matches.
It is in October at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility near Phoenix AZ.

Thank you guys for all the encouragement! I'll definitely be shooting more matches as they come up. But right now my 30-06 targets are morphing into the 4-legged furry kind with antlers. Nothing like deer camp in Oct, except maybe Elk camp in late-Oct ... going to Colorado for some Elk. First time for Elk. Should be fun too.

Anybody have any good hunting loads?[/QUOTE Find some good M2 ball, replace the bullet with a 150 grain soft or hollow point. I use 130 Speer flat base hollow point and shoot cleans at 200 and 300, with less recoil, and never had a Malfunction. |
