I cut off the plug and mine will now hold 13 in the tube and 1 in the chamber.

I'm looking for the guide gun version which does not have a octagon barrel (I'm not sure if this applies) but good to know though
It looks like the "marlin" ones have the serial number by the hammer and the NEW REM ones have the serial number on the left side of the receiver. Which start with a "MR" in the front of the serial number. I think, hopefully that's the case
I signed up on Gunbroker any advise on buying from there?

btw I really don't mean to step on your tread with all my questions. I just figured it was a good place to ask.

sunnyb, I just checked my son's guide gun and it has the JM stamp on the round barrel on left side next to the reciever and the serial # on the tang. His was made by Marlin about 5 yrs. ago. serial # has no prifix.

Charlie98: just curious: have you or the other forum members over there experienced any recent but serious quality issues with new Marlins? I certainly have, as has our local box-store sporting goods gun salesman. Fit & finish, incorrect machining, bad wood-to-metal fit, etc.

Apparently, they not only bought Marlin, but Remington also moved their Marlin factory, getting rid of all "the old guys". That group and their old-fashioned methods made manufacturing too pricey, a problem I'm sure all the major manufacturers are now facing, especially with significantly reduced new firearms sales these days. They just want to keep the doors open, after all.

Any thoughts?

(PS: I'm sure glad my 1895 is circa-1978!)
