Old stock too short, made a new one...

Apparently the original owner was a youngster-sized person. LOP was only 11". TOOoo short for my 6'3".

So, rather than buy one for $75 + shipping, I spent $22 for a piece of black walnut 2x6 22" long, with a knot in it. Nice grain near the knot, even though I had to buy an extra $8 of lumber to chop off the knot. Pistol grip materiel anybody? And now I have a custom Fancy grade stock, much cheaper than the $200 'they' get for them.

14" LOP, rollover cheek piece, all the camber I could get in the material I had. Truly custom.

Fore end was a factory one, had to sand off the modern hard as heck plastic finish.

Finish so far is two coats of hand applied Minwax Poly spar varnish. Two coats 2 hours apart, it's 95 degrees and dry here today. Hand rubbed, just like BLO, except not nearly as dark. In fact, in person, it's almost as gold as Myrtle. More coats to follow, but I do like it so far. Gun not totally assembled, I just wanted to show off.

I'm a big fan of the Trapper. I have a buddy who buys and sells guns a lot, but never seems to remember that I might be interested in them. I wish he'd thought of me before selling his .45 Long Colt Trapper and his 30-06 Model 1895!

One time we were shooting his Trapper on a 100 yard range with the sun behind us, and you could see the shadow of those big bullets zooming into the black through the spotting scope.

i love the .357 cal! i think it is the perfect cal. for the 16" barrel. .357 is a bit hot in a revolver but feels just right coming out of this gun.

what do these guns run for now a days? i got mine in a trade.
Hmmmm..... my curiosity gets to me. Charlene! In your photo, it sure looks like a group of three ME folks in hijab dress looking over some targets. Checking out what the 'Mur-Kans can really do @ 1000 yds perchance?

BTW, as to the current pricing on these lovely '92 rifles; I sell the standard Winchester 20" 1892 rifle right now for $989. Case color hardened sporter with 20" bbl is also$989.. The "Short rifle" listed oddly with a 20" bbl, but that may be a catalog typos, since heck; "short" is "short"! Anyhow, it sells for only $870.

The price for a .45LC or 44 Mag 1892 Trapper Takedown is POR in my catalog. Wonder why?

MesaRifle,

you have a good eye. i was wondering if someone was going to ask me about that. it is an ambiguous/controversial image when you see the whole image.

thanks for the info on the pricing. i am looking to sell mine. i have to check the model number but i think it might be a 94ae. its a cool gun, but i have to make room for another one that i want. the one i have is in very good 'used' shape.

I have a Winchester Trapper in 44 Mag.
i have found it so handy I will never get rid of it.

The 44 Mag in a rifle, or a handgun, kills like the Hammer of Thor.

I am a big fan of Winchester model 94's. Especially the trapper. I have one in 357mag,44mag and 45 colt. They are absolutely beautiful rifles. My daughter took her first deer in Texas with a model 94 Trapper in 357 at 100 yards. I will try to post pics of these beauties. By the way it was lever revolution ammo by Hornady. P.S. I love my M1A also. I forgot to mention I also have revolvers in those calibers. That's a plus.

I too have the .357 trapper carbine ...shot about 100 rds so far. Quick to point, light...PERFECT rifle for 100 yds and under for mid sized game. Oh yea..I have a 1892 winchester that had almost no finish, stocks bad, barrel shot . I rebarreled and refinished, restocked to a as new Old school .357 carbine...flat sweet rifle ill take to the grave. As a rule I NEVER refinish any winchester...but the action was about the only parts worth using...I even had to replace the mag tube.

I also have a Trapper in .357. It's my main plinking/fun gun. I recently added a Williams receiver sight that really helps my old eyes. I had another in .45 Colt that I foolishly sold some years ago.
