Red dot on 1895 guide gun?

What do you all think of using a bushnell trophy red dot on my 45-70 guide gun? my worry is that the scope won't hold up under the recoil.

I have the scout rail already on the rifle,I can mount just about any scope to it.

Anyone used this setup on their 45-70?

Not a red dot fan, so I dont know about the recoil concern. I have the Ashley ghost for mine and works good to me in NC thickets. Will admit 45-70 is big for our small whitetail, but comforting when I run up on boo boo. Gives you another option to think about.

Try a Burris FastFire II red dot. Many mounts available for them and they hold up to recoil no problem.

I took the advise given by Duke Nukem and picked up a Marlin Guide Gun about 2 years ago and to answer your question: Yes!

Scout rail with Aimpoint Micro dot.

... ...

I have also set it up with a 2.5x Scout scope.

Shoulder and arm surgeries have prevented me from firing the rifle, but that will change later this year.

I've already got the ghost sight with the firesight front. The ghost sight doesn't work very well for me,probably because my eyes can't see up cose anymore.

There's no reason in the world why it shouldn't work.
I thought about putting the same red-dot on my 1895G, but, put a Nikon ProStaff 2-7x32 mm scope on it, instead.

The Bushnell red-dot is going on an 870 slug gun, instead.

H20 MAN,
I hear ya, regarding surgeries. That kept me from shooting my Guide Gun for years.
However, I found (literally!) a GREAT load for the .45-70 using Cast Performance 405 gr WLNGC bullets and Reloader 7, and it is MILD and shoots cloverleaf groups (5 shots) at 50 yards.
This load is low pressure and really hits game with authority!!!
40.0 grains of RL-7 in R-P cases and the Cast Performance 405 WLNGC bullet, ignited with Federal 210 primers. (This load is right around 1680-1700 fps.)

I took a wild hog that the guide 'guesstimated' at 320-350 lbs, at 20 yards, and a hunting buddy said that when I hit that hog, it's skin 'rippled' from head to toe, like a rock hitting a pond.
The hog dropped where it was hit. It didn't take one step.

42.5 gr of RL-7 starts developing some 'kick' to 'em, and are still quite accurate!

The Federal 300 gr JHP loads are mild shooting, too.
Here's what my 1895G looks like. (My son calls the rounds, "Cigars" or "See-gars"!)

Thanks from H2O MAN and larryp

the leatherwood toby bridges scope is basically bullet drop compensated for the 45/70

red dots are superior to Irons in some ways, they are far faster, easier to use and IMO are a great addition to most anything, and thats from a man who LOVES Irons

The salient point (especially for old eyes.....sigh) is the dot in the same focal plane as the target.
I'm not sure about the Bushnell, but some of the game boys mount dots sights on the slides of semi auto pistols, so it seems like they should hold up to rifle recoil.
