Gun Review: Marlin 336
Posted on February 8, 2011

The Marlin 336 boasts classic smooth lines with just enough aggressive overtones to let you know it means business. Classic and deadly. Like Ben. I’m a major league tree hugger (re: his Weatherby PA-08 review). The warm tones of the Marlin’s walnut stock had me in full embrace mode. It’s a no frills, all smooth stock and forearm weapon, with just enough sheen to let you know this lady’s got class.

My review of the Marlin 336 was not the end of the story for that fantastical firearm. Even before the electronic ink was dry, I was hard at work building a Cowboy Assault Rifle (CAR). I dove into the world of lever action accessories like Charlie Sheen’s nose into a bowl of coke. With the exception of quad rails, Marlin lever action rifle accessories are go. A aspiring CAR tack driver can choose from mods ranging from ghost ring sights all the way to a lever action bayonet. Yes, if Bambi doesn’t go down after six shots, you can give the order to “charge!” and re-enact the 20th Maine’s famous run down Little Round Top. So much tacti-cool, so little real estate . . .

I got my wife a Marlin 336 when she moved out to California a few months ahead of me for precisely that reason. Didn't want to deal with the legal headaches (of California) and training issues of a pistol, didn't have a shotgun that would fit her, so a 336 was cheap and easy to get and simple to teach her to use effectively.

From a long time lever gun man, I have always thought of the Marlin or Winchester lever guns as being excellent for home defense.

That's awesome. I once had a defense attorney, and fellow shooting enthusiast, tell me that defending someone in a self-defense justified shooting was infinitely easier if when the weapon was introduced into court it was "something that looked like a wall-hanger, that had been passed down from grandpa's gun cabinet, and had only been taken off the wall as a last resort." He went on to add that anything that looked tactical could lead to you being portrayed as someone "looking for a fight". Although I think that this is total BS, it falls in line with the typical crap you hear in the California judicial system.
