1885 Winchester Highwall 45-70govt.

I just bought an 1885 Winchester Highwall...it's one of those Limited editions from Davidson's. Bought it on Gunbroker, payment and FFL sent. Really lookin' forward to receiving this new rifle.

I have sort of tuned my back on the ol' 45-70govt, these last few years(blasphemy I know!) especially with the user name I have, but I'm trying to make amends, now I also have my eyes on a Winchester 1886 Deluxe, and of course in 45-70govt!

Those were great guns. My Great Uncle used to have 2 rifles a Winchester low wall and a High wall. Single shots were/are good medicine. He nor my aunt went hungery long. I was a scamper then, but remember him cleaning them at his kitchen table. A distant cousin got them when he passed and hope that he still has them.

I have a Browning 1885 BPCR, Browning 1886, Marlin LTD V, and a Marlin SBL. All 45-70. One of my favorite calibers.

Enjoy.

I've owned more than a few Marlin 1895's, and one other Highwall....beside the sheer power of the ol' 45-70, I just love the history of it.

47-70

I have two Browning B78's in 45-70 and LOVE them! One has a 3-9 Leupold on it and the other has factory sights. The scoped B78 I have shoots like a dream, groups well under an inch at 100 yards and it's a whitetails worst nightmare, 300 grain Sierra soft points with the maximum amount of IMR 3031 you can put in the case. About 99% of the deer hit will never even twitch an ear.

I had a Browning 1886... it really was a beautiful weapon and a hoot to shoot! ...that big brass flying up out of the breech...

I sold it to fund my Socom16... I miss it, but I love my Socom. ...and I still have my Browning 71.

I have not had one ,but a friend has a Winchester 1886 made in 1890. The original barrel shot 10 inch groups at 100, good enough for him to shoot 2 bull moose with it. Cool history.

They are a fine rifle.
And 45-70 is a great cartridge.

I reload and use Buffalo Bore, (350 gr). That crescent butt plate will get your attention using the Buffalo Bore cartridges.
But you only need one hit.
One day I was shooting at a 500 yard steel plate, when someone asked to give it a try. I already had the tangent sight set for that distance, and handed the rifle to them.
Kaboom, 1thousand one, 1thousand t--CLANG! First shot and they hit that steel target, and they were amazed.
You could see in their expression they never had shot at and hit a target at that range.

This rifle is at least 15 years old and a solid shooter.

Have a Browning 1885 45/70. You can load that puppy up to eye watering shoulder dislocating levels if you are inclined! Hoot to shoot and more accurate than I can hold it.
One classy rifle!!

I just bought an Uberti made High Wall in .45-70 used at a pawn shop in Kalispell a couple days ago. Haven't shot it yet due to a nasty head cold. Came with a Lyman tang sight on it.

Thanks from bmcgilvray
