I shoot only BP with a small base charge of five grains of Smokeless in my 45-70-405 loads. I only use soft lead hollow base bullets and get very good accuracy.

I thought like many people that black powder was too dirty and hard to clean. Well I found out it isn't true if you use a drop tube and compress it pretty heavy. If you use 3F it will also burn cleaner. I wish that my smokeless rifles would clean up as easy. It's also necessary to control your fouling so during extended shooting as in matches you run damp or dry patch or two to keep a consistent level of fouling. On average I will run 6-7 patches to get it down to a shiny bore condition and I'm done. As has been said here before using small charges of smokeless in those cavernous cases can be problematic. I will use those powders for cast loads in my 03A3, Krag and others and get very low ES and SD as well as great accuracy. I won't use them in a black powder case.
