I would have to check the manuals but I think it might actually be either real close or a little over out of a carbine length barrel. I had a rossi for a while that I shot my hand loaded 125 grain JHP (were zinging alone at 1450 fps out of a four inch revolver) through and although I never got the chance to chrono them going off the data for TC contender 14 inch barrel if I remember right they were going over 2100 fps. The carbine I was shooting had I think an 18 or 20 inch barrel. While I can't say exactly how fast they were going I can say that after shooting a pretty think chunk of steel with it it left a lead colored smear with the revolver, and punched a nice neat hole through one side and made a pretty good sized dent in the other, so the velocity increase was sizable. I would have to assume that if you were shooting the .357 maximum out of a 20 inch barrel that could utilize more of the powder that even with 158 grain bullets it would really close to or over 2000
fps.
On another note I never found a bullet or load that shot well out of the carbine fast, the lighter loads that were around the velocity of the handgun out of the carbine shot okay, but the bullets and twist rate didn't seem to work very well at the velocities I was getting. Hope this experience gives you some help in your endeavor.
