Kicks like a mule....Well I'm a big boy but that was what I was afraid of.

My neighbor has a Contender in 45-70... now THAT is a handful.

I will probably load my own so I will have to find a reduced load for this gun.

I used to shoot a marlin 45-70 that belong to a high school buddy he ordered some cowboy loads from Winchester I think and they where a lot of fun to shoot. Remington corelokts not so much. About 5 rounds and your ready to move on to something else. Nothing like throwing those huge lead chunks though. Since you live up north you will have to make ice targets and try them with this rifle. Will be a blast literally. There are a lot of thick clear cuts around here and he deer hunted with it for years, ain't no wondering if you hit it with that.

Yours will be a bit different than that one, which looks custom. The No.1 in that cal will have the Alexander Henry schnable type forend and sights on the barrel and barrel band front swivel. A friend has one and he wants to sell it because of the recoil. Just keep it in Trapdoor specs and its a pussycat.

Enjoy the new rifle. #1 has always been on my list. I have a 1895G and love shooting the 45/70. I think you will enjoy the cartridge and you will have a wide variety of loads to choose for your uses.

Bought a Ruger NO.3 at gun show years ago in 223 and had 'smith friend of mine convert it to 45-70 with longer and heavier barrel than the factory version in 45-70. The NO 3 has a carbine butt stock on it and a different lever system but other than that the two are the same action. Easy to convert to about any caliber you want and other than buying appropriate extractor and whatever barrel/caliber you after, good to go. No question recoil is substantial with hot loads but I run those Remington 405 jacketed bullets at around 13-1500fps. and it's sufferable. Whatever you shoot with it is definitely DRT, dead right there! Looking for an abused one at gun shows for a while and found one and had two barrels made for it , one in 22-250 and other barrel in 348Win. but this one is a NO 1, cleaned up the wood/refinished, re blued, Unertl scope blocks on the 22-250(which is 8 twist) and installed quality open sights on the 348. The Ruger NO 1's and 3's are a fine action and hunting with them is a good way to learn to take a good shot the first time, no spraying and praying option available.

I was just thinking about a #1 in .348 just yesterday... wondering if anyone had ever worked up such a thing.
