It is definitely a cool cartridge especially if you reload for black powder. But the thin case mouth make for short case life unless Special Care is taken. And the bore diameter is slightly under that of most conventional 44, making the bullet selection not interchangeable with the rest of your 44 special and mag stuff.

I have been using Starline .44-40 brass with zero case loss after many reloading's, I have heard that from a lot of people but I have never encountered it, must be the quality brass.

That's what I've found too Len. Starline is the best brass for 44-40. I use .428 dia bullets too and get great accuracy. Load it with Trail Boss, shoots clean and a ton of fun to shoot!

A Winchester 1873 and a Colt Peacemaker, what more do you need?

I enjoyed reading the thread to linked to Len. I used to frequent that forum quite a bit when I got into the BP scene. Don't get there much anymore, but I try and stop in every 60 days or so to see if Rowdy posted any new pics or vids of his hunts. We kinda did a comparison of rifles awhile back when I chopped my 45/60 down to 24" from 28" - 1876 model.....

Anyhow - thanks for refreshing my interest in the 44-40 loadings.
