New, Big medicine baby!

As promised, here's a pics of my,(new to me), Browning 1886 45/70.
26" heavy Oct. barrel. Just produce a 3 shot, 3" group at 100 yards, off-hand with irons using a WW 300gr JSP.
BTW, fired 20 rounds of the Hornady 325 gr. Lever-evolution.
KILLS on BOTH ENDS! A curved, steel butt-plate is not condusive to shooting a 325gr projectile at 2050 fps!

A beautiful long gun! I hope to add a Winchester 92 to my collection this year.

That's a fine looking piece of history. I mortally love the weapons of the second half of the 19th century. It's amazing how much progress was made in just a relatively short period of time...

I really like the rifle. Your's looks like a beautiful specimen.
I've loaded for one for years. In my own experience the 45-70 is definitely a round to be respected. Nothing alive that matters can ignore a chunk of lead that size. I kept getting pressured to load the 500 grainers...but ended up at the 405 grain jacketed size and never was interested in trying to load anything heavier.
The recoil with that curved butt plate...well, I agree that the men of the era that the 45-70 was dominant in were men indeed. And probably men with sore shoulders and bruises too.....
Are you shooting jacketed or are you casting projectiles for it? The 45-70 is quite popular again due I think to the cowboy action shooting and other competitions and lots of projectiles are made for it as a result.
Remington used to sell bulk 405 grain JSP’s which were relatively inexpensive for jacketed projectiles and good enough for fun, plinking, and hunting with the 45-70 but would not meet competition level accuracy I’m sure if put to the test.
Please share with us any more load development work and what your own opinions are of the 45-70 after you have had it for awhile and when your shoulder quits hurting so much and you can sit down and type out a response.
Enjoy!

Have a friend with one of those, what a beast! That Buffalo Bore ammo is insanity (405gr @ 2000fps!!)

That was actually what inspired me to go pick up a Rossi Rio Grande. It's nice not getting pelted in the face, and while my recoil pad is lacking, it's certainly much better than a curved butt stock :P

Definitely reload for this thing too. Hornady sells the components for LeveRevolution ammo
