I've got a 99RS in 300 Savage; one of my favorite rifles. I think one reason you read more about the Marlins & Winchesters is that there are more of them out there, and people who have Savages usually don't tend to let them go. I'll run across one every once in a while at a gun show, but they don't often show up in any numbers.

Thumbs up Savage 99E The Smoothest Lever Action Made

Here's Pictures of my bought in 1970 Model 99E Savage in 308 Win.. I don't know what year it was Manufactured. It's a good shooter and being 308cal. it's a moderate Recoil to your shoulder. I found the year of manufacture,"1968".

I'm another big fan of the Savage 99. I have a 50s vintage in .300 Savage.

We've eating lots of deer over the years that fell to a Savage 99. It's a dynamic looking rifle with timeless styling. It's a good, strong action. Mine's been easy to handload for and brass lasts a long time.

Our eldest son on his first deer hunt at 5 months old with dad and a Savage Model 99. He's going to be 30 his next birthday.

Typical 100 yard 5-shot group from the bench rest. This group was made with Speer 165 grain spitzer boat tails rather than the usual Sierra 150 grain flat base or 165 grain boat tail the rifle seems to prefer. Scope is a Weaver K4.

Savage 99

Had a commemorative 99 in .308. Wish I'd never let it go.

Let's see - Savage lever rifles have been out of production for a long time - the 99E stopped production in 1984 - while Winchester and Marlin rifles remain in production and dominate the market. I can't understand why people don't talk about Savage rifles much.

I used to have a Savage 99 in .308 with the rotary mag. Sweet handling and very accurate. BUT it had a very heavy trigger pull and from what I was told Savage 99 triggers are very hard to try an adjust. You either have a good one or your stuck with what you have. That and it had a somewhat tight chamber that while commercial .308 would chamber easily NATO surplus often wouldn't which made it hard to get cheap plinking ammo ( back when 7.62 NATO was still inexpensive) so I sold it. Now I use a Browning BLR in .308 which is a much nicer lever .308. Not that there's anything wrong with a Savage that has a good trigger but it's like comparing a Chevy vs. a Caddy.
