New to the lever...

Just wanted a little input if you wouldn't mind. I have a friend and a father in law with a lot of land and a ton of pigs. Ive been shooting them with everything in the past. Then a buddy brought out a bueaty lever action Winchester (not sure but it had a. 16 inch barrel) with a few mods and iron sites. I think it was a trapper.

I fell for it hard. In my current state I can't shoot, or barely move for that matter so I was along for the ride this time out. And this thing performed flawlessly. He's an ex-sniper so that of course had something to do with it but it was fun to watch. 100 yards perfect shot took out a 130+ pain in the butt pig.

Anyway it got me itching. So I was driven to my local small town shop where I'm like Norm! And asked to see the very same rifle but this one was a few years newer. His Was a .44 win mag. I looked at the same but wow the price. And the fact for me my days of shooting a .308 may be numbered, due to rods, plates, bone graphs, and everything else they could shove in my neck and back when it broke. I was told my .308 days are over.

So the kid behind the counter handed me a Marlin 30-30. Very nice feel, lever, and made in the USA, which I was told Winchester was not, made in Japan?
The rifle that won the west made in Japan?

Well guys what's your opinion on the 30-30 with iron sites only. A pig gun maybe someday when all is better deer or a sort of killer lion that kills cattle and runs wild out here with impunity. A camp gun something to pass down.

Any input or suggestions. I can't shoot or do much for a while but I'm buying stuff anyway. Nothing else to do.

Thanks.

ECM, what kind of recoil levels are you limited too? I have an old 94 in 30-30 and the recoil in some of the levers kind of knife into you. The narrow butt stock is the culprit. I recently got a cimarron 1892 in 45 colt, the recoil is light and the 45 colt in an 1892 can be loaded to an impressive level. Ive been messing with LBT 265 gr GCs, and they penetrate like you cant imagine. Hope it helps and , hope you feel better.

Just as a reference, Howa of Japan builds the barreled actions for Weatherby. 10 years or more back I built a pair of heavy barrel varment .223s for my sons on Howa barreled actions, every bit as smooth and well finished as a Remington or Winchester, and the bluing was flawless. Seems a pity the Japanese can build such good weapons but not own them. We live in a topsy-turvy world!

ecm,you could look into pachmeyer decelerator recoil pads and having the barrel compensated to reduce recoil.

http://www.gentrycustom.com/ or google muzzle brakes and go from there

You might want to look into a lever gun in 25-35, or .357 magnum. Either of those cartridges produce 5lbs or less of free recoil and if properly used, will get the job done nicely.

Squid wasn't trying to start an Us vs. them argument it was just a surprise. I have plenty of weapons built elsewhere. It was just a surprise to hear, the gun that I just watched on a show that tamed the West was now made somewhere else, that was all. I know Howa makes a shooter.

Dprice defiantly going with the pad, have to. Changed out almost all my hi-cal to them already prepping for the new year. Thank you very much for the advice.

Beavis I never thought of that now I'm going out today! Hope they have a short barreled in the same set up in the .357 mag.

Hammer as far as far as my limitations, we don't really know yet. Leave it to me to have get a surgeon that was in the Israeli army and knows ballistics. I guess I was lucky. He doesn't want me to touch a .308 again but we later talked and discussed the many changes I made to my big guns and he just wants to see. We really don't know, he does know my M4 is fine but that really doesn't matter anymore. I was going to make a .243 just to be safe. But I think the precautions I took I'll be good. Thanks for the well wish.

Thanks guys learned a lot.

I have an '86 Winchester in 45-70, after some research i found out is was made int eh early 80s by Browning in Japan. It has "Made in Japan" stamped on the barrel. While is is almost sacrilegious it is just too much fun to shoot.
