There's an ad in the summer 201 issue of Black Powder Cartridge News (Steve Garbe's fine publication, available @
www.blackpowderspg.com, or (307) 587 7621. An excellent reference magazine with many articles on the delicacies and joys of black powder shooting), on page 53, for a new Lyman "Ideal Model™" Sharps. It's pretty much based on an 1874 version, but dimensionally it's a reduced size, a sort of
"Ooops.... I left it in the dryer too long, honey!" model.
For now, it's chambered
only in .38-55 and .22 Hornet (but... there's a swell wildcat you could build on the .22 Hornet! Huzzah!). And the .38-55, with a cast 250gr bullet about 1700 fps, will do the trick on a deer or 200 yd antelope. Not bad choices, actually.
Specs: 42" OaL; Twist: 1:18 (great!); Weight: 6 lb; bbl length: 26". It's made by Chiappa in Italy.
(And... for my arthritic old arms, shoulders, lower back and neck, that light weight would be a welcome alternate to my full-size 1874 target rifle, which weighs in at about 13 - 14 lb....)
It asao comes with a Custom Lyman Tang Sight with target & hunting apertures, Globe-type front sight, and a "bright finish receiver & vintage-style laser engraving!".
It would make both a great traditional hunting rifle in .38-55,
and a mid-range traget rifle, esp. if you replaced the rear sights with a better tang oule type sight.
I'm going to look into my wholesale cost, and will let the group know, if anyone else is potentially interested.
"I may just have to git me one, Pard!"
