I think it was written and intended as more antiwar than it comes across. I've always thought of it as a comedy/action movie with a WWII setting, and a pretty darn good one. I don't think it's nearly as anti-war as M*A*S*H or Catch-22, even if it was intended to be.

I have an original M-N sniper rifle in my gun safe. That is definintely a M-N in the belltower.

Yes. Now, where would a GI coming in from Normandy have picked up such a thing? Only thing I can figger is he took it off a German who picked it up on the Russian front before being transferred west.
