"a rumor of war"

Lots of M14's and Garanda in this one. Takes place early in the conflict as the Marines are first moving in country in great numbers.

Not a bad flick , really. It was taped on CBS using a VCR to put a date on the film.

Yeah, this was based off a biography written by Lt. Philip Caputo. Great read, haven't seen the movie yet though, they usually never do the book justice

I think I read in Soldier of Fortune that when this movie was made there were not very many M-14's available for filming so Garands were modified with a false magazine and other changes to make them look like M-14s. I would have to find it again to check.

Apropos of nothing, one thing I see Hollywood get wrong over and over again is stocks on guns. When the production designers want to make an absolute replica of an era, they get guns from that era. The Public Enemies movie about John Dillinger had BARs and Thompsons and whatever else. The only "problem" was the guns were authentic and the wood looked like it was 80 years old--because the wood was 80 years old.

Watching the Vietnam series on HBO I noticed how bright and shiny those M14s were.

I assume the gun owners don't want their weapons reconditioned and prop masters figure it would take too much time and $ to create brand new ones, even if they don't function.

They were BM 59's.

Ah, yes, A RUMOR OF WAR, starring that well known Vietnam War "veteran" Brian Dennehy.

The book was much better than the movie, as is usually the case.

Another good vietman War Book is "CHICKENHAWK" by Robert Mason.

Sadly after he returned from the War he became involved in smuggling, was arrested, convicted and served time.
This is told about in his second book "Chickenhawk back in the World: Life After Vietnam".

Thanks from CAVman

We were in Vietnam during the battle of Ia Drang which was the first major battle of the Vietnam War. It was between November 14 and November 18, 1965 and our operational tempo increased dramatically during that time. I came back to the world for the final time at the end of Feb 66...
