I cannot remember where I read it but a Special Forces or Delta soldier that knew Randy Shughart well enough stated that Randy Shughart would have had a traditional glass rifle scope on his M14 in Somalia. That was his "set up" on the M14 and the friend didn't think Randy Shughart would have changed it. So, the Aimpoint on the M14 in Black Hawk Down was Hollywood embellishment.

I would resepctfully disagree with you.

While I would believe someone who knew what the guys used at the time and that the Delta sniper would not have had a red dot sight, there were aimpoints and they were in use by delta at the time. The movie shows a newer version, however Delta would have been using an older Aimpoint.

The following picture, although crappy, shows Delta with aimpoints on their rifles (ignore the yellow ring). The second picture is of a ranger around 1993 with an aimpoint. And although hard to see, the last picture is of a seal in 1993 with an aimpoint. No these are not people I know, they are pictures that have been collected, I trust the sources but you can make up your own mind.

Here is a little history of Aimpoint and their different models. As the SF troops have always bought the best and latest equipment it is not unreasonable to think they were using Aimpoint red dot sights back then and even before then as some have suggested

I just noticed something. In the third picture, the M14 has a forward PG that appears, to me at least, to be fabbed from wood and throughbolted to the stock (incontrast to the attached rails we see these days). Interesting.

K

PS Thanks to everyone for the insights on the weapon.

Question

Quick follow-up question to the movie rifle. What type of mount was used for the Aimpoint on the movie rifle? Thanks

Cool

We used O.E.G. sights in the early to mid 1980's. I think that the Aimpoint was an offshoot of the O.E.G. It could be the current Aimpoint was in circulation long before civilians could obtain them. Just my 2 cents.

Few remember the OEG,,very robust,,no batteries,great on our MP5s
As well as the SS series from Beeman/Hakko

Yes the PG was a mod,,

Early Aimpoint 1000s ? were used,,we didn't like to rely on batteries

I had an Aimpoint 2000 When I was assigned to a NATO unit and we were preparing to deploy into the Bosnia in 1992 for countering snipers as best we could. I still have it! It took another trip to the Desert in 98'-99'

Hello, newbie here but not to firearms and shooting.

Aimpoint as a company is 30 years old.

However the closest that sight could have been in the movie would have been to the "original" is the "Comp" model which was released for sale in 1993. I'd have to watch and freeze the movie but it kind'a looked more like the CompM or M/L version. Time wise that would be cutting it close.

Moot point anyway since it sounds like he used a regular scope in real life from what I've read here.

Might want to take a lok at Aimpoints website for more info even on models the have dropped from production.

Yes it did. I watched a certain project develop as a memorial to MSG Gordon and SFC Shughart for their acts and believe me as much detail as possible was brought about by talking to former friends and teammates.

I asked the developer about the scope because at first there was a 10x scope on it, but then he found out that he was using a red dot on the 3 Oct 1993.

Here is a link to the project if anyone is interested. You really won't believe your eyes all the work that went into this.

At some point it will be placed in the SF war museum near FT. Bragg, NC.

Aimpoint was used in the early 1980's. I remember seeing one at Ft. Ord with the 7th ID about 1983 or 84.
