Are all 1911 .45 magazines interchangeable?

Hi everyone.

So can you use the same magazine in a Kimber, in a Colt, in a Springfield etc. ? Or is each magazine specific to a particular make and model?

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'm on the market for one finally.

I don't know of any that are not compatible with the other. I use Wilson Combat and Chip McCormick's Shooting Star mags in all my 1911s (Colt, Kimber, Springfield Armory), and also have a few GI ones, too.

An obvious exception would be Para Ord's and other's high-capacity frames, which are then not true 1911 pistols in their entirety anymore.

There are also reported issues with using magazines of one type of follower or another but they do WORK.

If made for a 1911 they should be but may not fit well. I have encountered what were suppose to be GI mags years ago at a gun show that were tight. Unless they fall free I don't buy them. The dealer ran me away from his table after I tried about a dozen and kept two. I let him also keep the two that worked after that.

Good quality mags like Wilson, Colt, Kimber, or Para should be pretty much interchangeable on any well made 1911. Personally, I prefer Wilson Combat. I don't care for the McCormick follower, otherwise they are good mags.

interchangable

You can change them between as long as they are all the same size (single/double stack, kimber ultra's are actually smaller).

I soot bullseye and use Kimber magazines in all of my custom guns even though none is a Kimber.

I've got mags from several manufacturers and they will all work, but some work longer than others. Stear clear of the ones previously referred to that appear to be "GI" that you can buy new and cheap at gun shows. The feed lips are soft and will gradually splay out resulting in jams. Terrible! I had one that the base plate even fell off.

Stick to the good stuff. A cheap magazine can render a pistol inoperable at exactly the wrong moment. Wilson and Kimber both seem to be good to me, as well as the mags of unknown origin that come with Springfield Armory Inc. pistols - had no problems with them either.

Officer/compact mags are shorter due to the grip size than the Govt/Commander model. I have a Baer and Nighthawk.
I have used most of those mentioned above. My top two choices are Wolff ( yes, the same as the springs ) and Tripp Research. Check both these out.

Single stack 1911 magazines for a paticular caliber are all intended to be compatible. However, some will fit better than others. Unless they are factory original to the make of my gun, I always like to try them out before I buy them. Unfortunately, I've bought "bad" mags. before.

GI mags will not fit in my Kimber Tac Pro. Had to order Kimber mags at a pretty penny.

Interchageable v. a "match"

Just as all .45 ACP ammo is interchangeable, so are the mags.

A bit sarcastic... some rounds feed more reliably in your pistol, and some magazines are more reliable as well.

My advice for a carry pistol is to select and test and test again the ammo/magazine combination for your particular pistol.

Specifically: yes, you can use a Kimber magazine in a Springfield. I have two Kimbers and two brands of magazines work well: Wilson Combat and high-end Kimber magazines.

+1 and +1 on the Wolff and Tripp Research.

Not cheap, but more than worth it.

and the overall answer, within reason, and depending on if it's a full size or compact or? is...........yes and no. Whatever you do, ensure that the magazines you use for your "go to" gun have been tested with many rounds of your "go to" ammo you intend to shoot through it. JMHO.

One exception seems to be at the 1911 high end, where a couple production-custom brands have the slide stop fit tweaked enough that other high end make mags don't activate the slide stop. The Wilson 47D has been well regarded for years, but a couple of similar priced 1911s sometimes don't lock back when used with Wilson mags. The 1911 makers, of course, says to use their mags and there will be no problem.

And those new in wrap 'GI surplus' mags, probably aren't. GI that is. They will fit in a 5" 1911 and they may work great, and last as long as the WWI mag I have used in my 1918-built Colt. But unlikely to be GI.

For instance, I looked at the 'GI' mags that CTD is listing. The description suggests it is GI, but note 'style' is used 3 times. Assembly numbers, wrap; sounds good but is it really GI? Of note, the only review I read said they work fine.

from CTD: "Original GI style .45 magazine for 1911 auto. Assembly numbers on bottom of blue steel magazine.
Made in USA
Holds 7 rounds of .45 auto. Brand New in wrap. Military 1911 Style, 7 rounds, blue. GI style new in military brown paper wrap."

I would agree - anytime I see 'style', it says to me - warning!
