Thinking of trading my XD

I am thinking of trading my SA XD .45ACP for a 92FS. I like my xd but .45 is getting expenvive..as is 9mm, but 9mm is cheaper and I like the 92FS platform. The XD is really bulky and very top heavy, but I still like it. Any pros's con's for the 92FS vs XD, can anyone talk me out of thinking this?

Roll Your Own

In a word: Reload. Regardless of caliber, from 9mm and larger, factory ammo is going to be expensive. Roll your own. I've not purchased a factory .45 round in over 20 years.

As an aside, I noticed a decent price on a Dillon Square Deal B in the B/X earlier. This and a set of .45 dies and your in business. You'd likely recoup the cost in fairly short order if you shoot with any regularity. Just my opinion. Best of luck with your decision.

I agree with the reload option. I bought myself a dillon a while ago and cranked out a few thousand rounds on .45 on the cheap. I've also never found the XD45 to be top heavy, as 13 rounds of .45 balance it out quite well.

And if you think the XD is bulky, I bet you aren't going to think much better of a 92FS. I've always found those about as ergonomic as a two by four.

haha, yeah it does come out nicely with a mag, I haven't handled a 92 in a while, but I remember it having a better fit. Yes, I need to start reloading too. So, what I'm getting at is: is the 92 any better than the xd?

Short, non-inflammatory answer? No. They're both quality pistols.

Why not keep the .45 and also get the Beretta? If that's not an option for you and you're bound and determined to have one or the other, get/keep the one that fits you best.

FWIW, I've been issued the Beretta M-9 (.mil moniker for the 92FS) for ten years and always found it to be a good pistol, even in Iraq and Afghanistan.

If you're of the "survival" mindset, Beretta sells M92 parts and IIRC, Springfield doesn't sell XD parts.

And another +1 on reloading.

Well, I admit, I don't own a 92FS (but have carried it as a duty weapon), but I really like my XD better. It has a clean, protrusion-free exterior and a great natural point of aim (at least for my hand).

While the beretta has some great aftermarket support (XD is gaining ground though) and uses cheaper ammo, the only reason I'd pick one up is to use it in service pistol competition.

I carried a Beretta M9 (92F) in the Army for 2 yrs and I've now owned and carried an XD-40 for the past 2 yrs. My vote, having carried both, goes to the XD. The 92 is just too darn big for a 9mm, you can't put any optics on it, and it doesn't have the safety features an XD has. Plus, IMO the XD handles and shoots better.

I have a 92 and agree with those who say it's big for a 9...I've tried the XD and I like the trigger...but yesterday I tried a Smith and Wesson M&P 9 and I liked it much better than the XD...felt better in the hand and I like the trigger better also...and it has nicer lines...I still can't get past that slide o the XD...way out of proportion for my tastes.....

I like the 'buy one of each' philosophy. Big comet is due to hit the earth in 2012 so I'm trying to have a good time 'til then.

I like my Sig P220. I like my Beretta. I like my Ruger revolvers, Mark II's and P series, and I even like my Daewoo
9mm.

Not many guns I don't like.

Well, I just blew a ton of cash on my M1A, so I was contemplating maybe just trading it. For the time being, I'm keeping the XD, hopefully after the election we'll still be able to buy a 92...I was just wondering if there was anything that set these two apart. I appreciate your responses and please keep em coming if you can think of anything else.

personal experiance...

I used to own a Taurus PT 92. It is the Taurus copy of the Beretta M92 9mm.
It shot great! Very accurate and ammo was not to expensive.

I got rid of it years ago and now own a SA XD .45 ACP.

Both are good choices. But between the two the XD is the choice I made. I don't find my the least bit top-heavy. As was said before; if you think the XD is bulky, the 92F/S isn't going to be much of a difference IMHO.

I agree wholeheartedly that loading your own ammunition would be the best decision regardless of caliber. Again IMHO, why not chuck a brick at something and go with a .45 acp.

Best of luck with your decision. Either way they are good sidearms.

I have had a Beretta 92fs for 16 years. It is a quality pistol to be sure but it is some what bulky compared to others. I own an XD-40 which I also consider to be a quality pistol. Yes ammo for .45acp is somewhat more expensive than 9mm but not that much more and reloading can alleviate that issue. Remember this, 9mm ammo has basically tripled the past 5 years due to military demand, this isn't going to change much in the future. So back to the original question - why keep the XD - because it comes with a LIFETIME warranty if you bought it new and Berettas only come with a 1 year limited warranty. GITEN

My friend you have seen way too many movies! The idea that a firearm has the fault of it being easy for an attacker to disassemble it in the hands of the operator is beyond assenine. You must be joking and I am just too dense to pick up on it. Valid is your comment that it could be pushed out of battery like many pistols.

I never cared for the 92 when they began issue in the military. I was already carrying a 1911 and had the fortunate option of switching out or keeping the 1911. After shooting the 92, I decided easily to keep the ol .45.
