Three things to consider. Trigger, trigger and trigger if you are shooting at any distance. For most close and personal SD scenarios, dependability is more important than precision shooting.

It's got to be a natural pointer. Can you bring it up and point and shoot w/o sights.

HK? Glock 19? Sig?
If you have a chance, try the S&W M&P series. For me, the ergonomics are much, much better than the Glocks from the get-go, and you have the option of changing out the backstraps to better fit your hand.

For autos the Browning Hi Power is excellent, as is a Colt 1911 and the CZ-75. Can't go wrong with any of them.

For revolvers I like the S&W N & L frames, pre lock of course. I also shoot Ruger single actions very well.

Love the HK USP in both full size and compact.

This is important. It's been about 15 years since I've been able to see the sights on a pistol.

I'm partial to old school 9x18 Russian Makarovs. But I also have a newly kindled love affair with a loaded compact SA 1911 "Champion" in 45. and then there's this Magnaported Glock 23C 40 cal. with a trigger job, but she's my buddy's.......yeah it's complicated when your a gun .
But seriously, those are all great options. the Mak is definitely the cheapest, but also ridiculously reliable, tough and accurate under even the most retarded conditions.

To answer your question, personally, for me it would be with my 3" S&W 629 shooting 44spl. I have those new Hornady defensive carry fragmenting rounds. I have shot coke can at 50ft with this pistol and FMJ practice rounds.
If I felt the need to carry an auto pistol it would be my usp40 with extended LEM mags.

Traditions Trapper .50 flintlock

Actually I shoot any handgun pretty good. I have a 371,### s/n series stock LCP gen1 that I qualify with (40/40) with any old factory ammo (out to 25-yards).

I think this makes tons of sense:

(okay so I'm kidding about the flintlock)

Define "defensive pistol".

A accurized M1911 will shoot any of those mentioned in to a cocked hat . . . and, I can shoot it self defense.

Depending on the situation, the FN five seven is pretty amazing and you can't beat the 20 or 30 rnd mag capacity in a carry gun. A 42 gr bullet at 2000 fps out the barrel is a good contender.

In my opinion, any decent quality pistol could be accurate in the right hands. It just depends on fit and feel to the Individual. I have big hands so my .357 P226 is my favorite. I just can't seem to shoot smaller handguns quite as well.
