SA 1911 Loaded MSH question

Can I use the factory MSH on a 1911 Loaded with a GI 19lb spring, retaining pin and top plug? I see it already has a hole for the pin.

I'm not positive Rich, but I put a flat MSH on a SAI 1911a1 if that helps.

Thanks from Rich D

I think he is asking if swapping springs and parts will work with his factory MSH.

You can just swap the spring as long as its a std. mainspring housing and not one of SAI ILS main spring housings. Arched-Flat-Wedge shaped are all the same internals only the ILS is unique because of it lock.

It is the ILS housing, but the std. GI type parts do fit, including the retaining pin as there is a hole for it, but that's with the Springer mainspring. I've got std. 19 lb mainsprings on the way from Midway, and was wondering if I could use std. parts in the ILS. I'll just give it a try, as I'll have all the parts on hand.

My understanding is the cap is larger for the ILS lock and while the parts may fit inside the housing it will not have enough travel when fired. If you could get it assembled into the frame it will bend or break the hammer or its strut when fired.

Your better off getting a non-ILS housing and std internals too go with the 19lbs mainspring.

Thanks from Rich D

Wasted, how do you like the flat spring? Any benefit to using it?

The only thing different about flat or arched is how it feels in the individual hand and the way it looks. I prefer the arched style, but two of mine have the flat, the Rem and the STI.

IIRC, the ILS mainspring housing will work with standard parts. I once owned a Springfield 1911 in .40 S&W that had been converted like that before I bought it. I swapped MSHs with a standard arched one anyway, because I prefer the arched style over the flat one.

Thanks from Rich D

I like it Cap, no Benefit really I just don't really like the hump on the GI model. It's just the housing in the back of the grip is straight instead of arched.

I pretty sure you have too remove the lock from the ILS too use std. parts.

I would be very surprised if it didn't fit.

To all,
I have a TRP and removed the cap, spring and bottom button went with standard internals with pin to retain spring cap as per non ILS, Loctited ILS so it would not move and pistol functions fine. Didn't want to replace MSH as factory finish is black Teflon.

John

I replaced the SA guts with Colt parts and a 19 pound Wolff mainspring. Everything fit, and the trigger is much better, going down almost a pound to about 4.75. It seems to function just fine, though I haven't shot it yet. I didn't touch the lock.
