Please post a pic, is your pistol commander length? You are doing the right thing the short guide rod and standard plug is the way to go IMO.

No you want the std. guide and the std. plug for a 5in pistol. Forget the commander plug and guide rod both are shorter than the std. 1911 parts.

Thanks from XUSNORDIE and MrShmitty

Did i say commander (doh!) i meant government size.

So all i need is a government size gi guide rod and plug right they just go right in, in place of the full length jammy? I dont need a differant spring or barrel bushing right? Also do i need to run a buffer on the guid rod?

Springfield only made a very few Commander sized TRP 1911s in fact they were even shorter than Commander size as they were 4 inch instead of 4.25 in barrels. Most TRPs are Government size/ full size thus you will need the full size GI

Yep, that's all you need for parts and they will drop right in also no need for the buffer either.

Thanks from High Hat

It's a nice mod to any 1911 with a full length guide rod. I never did like them and switched all mine over to the GI style. Those links are the parts I bought and have worked well for me with zero issues.

I went to GI, and then moved back to the 2 piece full. It much smoother cycling with a full rod. But I'll probably go back and forth with them.

I would also replace the 2 piece mag well with a Smith & Alexander, and at least the easy to change out MIM parts with Wilson Combat parts as well. I swapped the stock grips with real VZ brand grips also, the texture is much sharper on the VZs.
