I picked up this Open Top Colt

I really love my Open Top Colt's. I have plenty of 1873's but I seem drawn to the early versions of Colt pistols before the iconic 1873 Army Single action. There is something in the beauty of it's look and feel. I already have the 1871 Open Top conversion with a Navy grip in 45Colt with a 4 3/4" barrel and standard blue. I also have the 1872 Open Top Richards/Mason conversion in a 5 1/2" barrel in 45Colt with the Army size grip.

So I learned about this Nickel plated 1871 on the warehouse shelf at Taylors Distributors and bought it. It is a Open Top with Navy size grips and a 5 1/2" barrel in 45Colt. Anyway it arrived a couple of days ago and I wanted to share these photos of an often forgotten model of Colts early years of production.

For those who may be curious, Uberti has been manufacturing their revolvers using forged receivers for quite some time. These revolvers are the very best money can buy with quality the originals never could match.

Question

Navy grip Army grip what's the difference, I was always under the impression it was just a difference in frame size too match the Cal.

BTW, nice pistols.

Don't feel bad Phil. I didn't even know what an open top Colt was!

Nice Looking Revolver. Looks like something that Clint Eastwood would Pull in one of his old Westerns.

Army grip is for a full hand grasp.

Navy grip is for a smaller grasp with the "pinky" finger barely hanging off.

Army....

Navy...
