Then there is a prospector I know who used to carry a .44 Mag Ruger Redhawk. The guy was tiny and the gun was almiost as big as him. I slicked up the double action trigger for him after he shot himself a Black bear that was stalking him. Apparently, some bears DO consider human beans as part of their diet. He said it took all six rounds, and the bear dropped close enough to touch.

PS: This wiry old coot could shoot. After I tuned the Redhawk we range tested it, and he shot it DA better than I could ... and I usually won the revolver stage of our local bowling pin shoots with my own slicked up, magnaported Redhawk.

Come to think of it, a lot of my customers who wandered around in bear country, preferred the Redhawk .44 Mag.

6 rounds of .44 mag and still close enough to touch a black bear wouldn't give me a lot of confidence on a grizz.

When I lived in Northern BC, In Terrace, I ended up as the outdoors editor forthe local news paper, The Terrace/Kitimat Herald. Living up North, in bear country, you hear a lot of bear stories.
And fish stories.
And the best of the best,
" I had just landed the BIGGEST DAM ( SALMON/TROUT/STEELHEAD) I have ever seen, when the biggezt dam Grizz I have ever seen came out the brush and stole that record (S/T/ S) rght off my line".

I did considerable research into this subject for an article I wrote.
Including Hear say and "scientificly" supported facts.

Supposedly TRUE Grizz facts were taught during the MANDATORY BEAR AWARE class that all Northern BC Govt employees took. I took this course and my wife took the civvy equivalent course at our local Fush abd Game club, aka: through "Wilderness Women".

Fact: on average, less than 10 human beans are killed by bars per year in BC
Fact: Bears are UNPREDICTABLE!! One of the foremost experts on bears got killed by a bear
Fact: from interviews with actual bear encounters where pepper spray was PROPERLY used, most bears left immediately. However, in a significant number of cases, the bear returned within a few hours, and pepper was NOT effective.
Fact: in documented interviews with the SURVIVORS of actual bear attacks, physical injuries sustained by the humans were statistically equivalent between those who fought back, and those who played dead. Of course this sampling is BIASED, as only survivors were interviwed. The non-survivirs had absolutely nothing to say.

Over and Out.

I bought this .44 Mag a few years ago and had it Magna-ported for such a purpose, but since haven't made it back to bear country.

I had a LEW HORTONS 4" S&W N frame with the K frame grip mod. It was also Magnaported and should have been licensed as a FLARE gun. Just for Sh!ts and giggles, I shot a REVOLVER ONLY IPSC match with it, using 24 gr 2400 behind a 240 gr HARD cast bullet. After about 60 rds, they were calling me Dirty Larry.
The next day, I was more like "LIMP WRIST Larry".

I have owned several Ruger revolvers and think very highly of the Redhawks. My buddy Frank, of M14.CA fame has two of the 4" SS Redhawks, one factory original, and one chopped back from a 7". He also has a SS Marlin .45-70 shorty.
Some days at the range, it is literally a BLAST!!
Makes a nice change from the wimpy Glock 23 and the wimpy M14.
WHOO HOO!

Thanks from Deacon

I have a friend who outfits south of Bozeman, MT and he tells me that the Bear Spray is more effective than a pistol... says a pistol just makes them mad. I hope I never find out.
Based on the number of times another friend shot a bear in Alaska before making him stop whathe was doing on the spot, I tend to believe my Montana buddy.
I shot a Boon and Crockett black bear with a 338 Jarrett, it was amazing what it could soak-up and stand .... granted I did not shoot it in the head nor spine.
That gave me a whole new level of respect for bears of any kind.

If I knew for sure I was going to be in grizz country for extended periods of time, I would have a 870 with a short barrel full of slugs.
Wow.....amazing......it took 7 posts for the almighty Glock to be brought up.....against Grizzly no less.....

Damn Polack you skipped a beat.....

The closest thing to a grizz where I live is a meth monkey. Note I ended the post with the proper protection from either, 870+slug= death. I just pitch that G20 in there to rile y'all up and BC I got one a couple weeks ago and I like it.

Thanks from Rich D

My house went up for sale a couple of weeks ago. If it sells, I move.

We put our rental property up today. When it sells we are going to build a better small efficient home on the land I already own. I hope it sells pretty quick. I have built 100s of homes but never one for me or my family.

You will enjoy building your own and getting what you want, just as you want it.
