Dan Wesson Heritage RZ-45 Overview and quick shoot (video)

I've never owned a full-size, single-stack 1911 and I wanted to get one in 2011. I was unable to find a blued Colt O1970 in time (still looking, and now saving money again since depleting my funds).

After much research and investigation and hemming and hawing, I purchased a Dan Wesson over a Colt O1070 because the Dan Wesson felt about 80% better and was only about $150 more.

The Heritage has exactly the sights I wanted, the trigger is STELLAR, the fit and finish is excellent (with the exception of the thumb safety, which I'm going to have to radius a bit along the rear edge). From what I've read the quality of the parts is excellent as well.

The first 5 rounds I shot were in a group of 1.25", just above POA, using Remington "Leadless" 230 grain. I haven't shot any more groups, just banging steel for fun. My 12-year-old boy fell in love with this pistol and I'm afraid I'm going to have to give it to him when he's old enough.

I think I made the right choice. I still want a nice blued Colt but it'll have to wait.
Video here for those interested.

I like the bare slide. Nice engraving platform.

Would look pretty neat with a pair of battleship gray VZ grips.

Oh, and the "leadless" is lead free primers correct? Makes sense for an indoor range if it even makes a difference.

Yeah, lead free primers, and enclosed base bullets. No exposed lead to vaporize.

Those VZ grips are wicked... I've been thinking about the greenish ones.

Or these in desert sand or predator green

Esmeralda grips

Not sure I'm going to keep these... they're more yellow than I hoped.

I was thinking the battleship gray because it'll match the bead blasted portions of the gun perfectly, then the polished grip screws would contribute to the polished flats on the gun. Wood grips would throw out the bad ass "tactical" look of the gun and turn it into a relic. IMHO.

I have the Operator 2's on one of my 1911's and I love them. Only problem is that they don't come in battleship grey. I'm placing an order through Springfield's Stocking Dealer catalog for another 1911, (beadblasted with polished flats). I already checked one out with some battleship grey VZ's and it is SEXY.

Another thing I love about the VZ's, if they don't fit the thumb safeties, (like mine) you can dremel/sand off what you need to and just hit it with a dab of oil and it looks good as new. They do feel great in the hand though. Very grippy. I had to take some high grit paper to the entire grip to dull down the cuts because they were actually tearing into my hand. They have options for different cuts to work with your gun as well. Safeties, flat bottom, thumb notch, bobtail.... All kinds. Check them out in the drop down list when you click on a grip you like on the site.

Pics for those who don't want to watch a video.

Whaddaya think? I'm not sold on the look, personally. Too yellow. Maybe on a blued pistol.

I really like the look of the grips. They give your new stainless DW 1911 a real touch of class...
