I don't own one, and I've never fired one...but I've sold at least 20-25 of them in my years behind the counter, and purchased them back for resale, never has one been returned to Ruger for service, and never has anyone spoken negatively about one. The trigger is not as nice as a S&W, but still nice.

Sold mine to my bro in law as he is left handed. Needed a GOOD, DEPENDABLE sidearm for bear and such in eastern Idaho. Stainless steel, I had worked the hammer and trigger, but wasn't shooting it. Went to a better place.
Really under appreciated as a design; far stronger than any S&W or Colt. My only concern is large factory grips, though a great fit in the hand, block speed loaders. I never had the chance to try rubber speed loaders, so those might work.
Extremely accurate w/4 inch barrel, my cast loads, a Saeco 150 gr bullet. Could take a deer at 50 yards, no problem.

I've owned both S&W 686's and Ruger GP-100's.
The Ruger are nice, good shooters but heavy.
I still have a 686 but I let the Rugers go mainly due to weight.
Personally I would find a good used pre-lock S&W 686 and you've got a revolver for life.

Mine is still going strong after 21 years. It's probably seen 3,500-4,000 rounds. Probably half of those were magnums. Fits me well with factory grips, but I like Hogues better.
I have multipe S&W's, and this would be my second to last handgun to go (last would be my Freedom Arms premier grade .454).

I had one and traded it. Worst mistake I made. I liked it while I had it.
They are good guns.

As a general rule, I don't like Rugers; but there are two I DO like and those are the GP-100 and the little 2245 autos. The GP-100 is a good, strong, reasonably priced revolver. Ruger's best product in my book.
But I agree with Hgunner: The S&W triggers are much nicer right out of the box. (I'm a S&W fan).

Hi,
I've one for very long time, a 161 , stainless style. Very good gun, the design is very strong (especially on the top). Never failed. I think S&W are very ggod too, but never tested.
To my point of view, it is not a mistake to buy one.

I've had a 6" for years, several thousand rounds through it, never a problem. As noted above, it is a very strong, and the trigger, while still not as good as a good S&W, has smoothed up well over the years. Mine has been quite accurate, too. I like the changeable front sights, and the grips fit my mitts well. Good, solid, dependable revolver.

| I agree with Hgunner and Sustinemus. I have Smith & Wessons and love them. A friend had the GP-100 and it was very impressive.
I would buy one. |

If I were to purchase another .357, it would be a used Security Six or a GP 100. I've always been impressed with how ruggedly they were built. More so than a Colt or a S&W. The Rugers will handle, and stand up to hotter reloads better than the other manufacturers. JMHO. dozier

I love my 6" GP100. Rugged, reliable and eats magnums all day long. Not as "pretty" as a 686 if you will but it is an absolute beast in ruggedness. Looks good too. |

I carry a S&W 629 out & about on our place (200+ acres in mountainous E. Kentucky), the Missus a few years ago let me know she wanted a SS wheelgun for the same reason. I bought her a GP-100 with a 4" barrel, it's one sweet piece. Probably more indestructible than any revolver I've ever handled.
