just a stupid 'normal' question?

hi All,
Have been learning and reading here about 'chamber' specs and other items of interest concerning MY M1A rifle... Have ONLY shot handloads out of it since I recieved it and am playing with the 'ten shot hot shot' thing here which is proving to be VERY fun and informative? It is giving me a chance to get my old rusty reloading gear looked at again at least...

Question though: My rifle came with a tag showing the head space set @ 1.631 Good, bad or Indifferent? Any preferences? Bullets? Powder?
4th reload brass is getting loose primer pockets so will toss after this firing; is that correct?

Thanks, Jeff

Jeff if you got four reloads that's enough. Toss them. You might get some more with cracking head separations but you are risking fire etching the chamber.

Strip your bolt, size some cases and find where the bolt closes with light finger pressure. Then you have perfect headspace with that setting. I do this but size a little more so I can feel a little fwd back slop in the bolt when closed. Very little . Look at a feeler gage. Typing paper is about .003" that's way enough.

I believe 1.631-1.632 is considered optimal for a target rifle.

If you feel the primer slide in easier than normal, toss the brass. You can save the primer if you want. A loose primer pocket allows primer blowback, which means hot primer gasses will etch your boltface. The primer burns hotter than the powder and can do more damage than a head case separation.
