Another head space question

I received my clymer tool head space gauge this weekend. I went to Lazerus2000 posting about head spacing with feeler gauges and went to work. First I disassembled the bolt, next I looked around until I found my ejector. :(

I closed the bolt on an empty chamber and I could get a .012 gauge behind the right lug. With the 1.630 .308 Go gauge I could get a ..008 gauge behind the lug. So this tells me I have head space of 1.638.
One posting I read said 1.640 was no go for .308 another said 1.638 was field reject for .308.
I have a Polytech from the early 90's with less than 500 rounds through it.
The lugs looked to be evenly worn.
Is this gun safe to shoot?

Yes it should be safe to shoot. Head space up to 1.640" is within acceptable limits, but 1.638" is usually considered the maximum desirable limit.
