refinish birch stock

I received a stripped birch stock and would like to know how to finish it. I'm looking for a USGI type finish. So, I'm thinking stain (color suggestions welcome!) and then Tung oil or tru oil.

Looking for suggestions

When i refinished my walnut stock all I did was clean it with oxyclean, let it dry and then used pure linseed oil. I did not stain it at all. When I go the stock it had a lot of dings in it, however it was not missing any wood nor did it have deep gouges. I worked the iron and steamed it for a couple of hours to get rid of every imperfection. It came out looking virtually new. I did not do any sanding on the stock at all. Here are my results.

If you saw how it looked before hand you would think it was a different stock. Using the oxyclean really stripped everything out of the wood. It looked like a brand new piece of wood. I have heard others using simple green and plan on giving that a try on the next one. I also hear some place them in the dishwasher for a cycle and it comes out clean as a whistle but do that when the wife is not around.

If you do plan on steaming out any dings with the washcloth and iron, be careful around the proof marks

For best results on birch stocks after all sanding is done use a wood conditioner ,this will allow stains and finishes to absorb more evenly.Alchohol stains in various colors can make the stock look any way you want.
