In the days before the BAD-T3

What was used to secure the gas cylinder when removing/re installing the gas plug?

I got it off easy enough just using my hand to secure the cylinder and a bit of Kroil applied about a week before.

Now, it's time to re install and the amount of torque will more than likely exceed my grip strength.

Best solution? I am on a fixed income and right now, the cost of the BAD tool is just out of the question as much as I would like one.

The rifle is a SAI, all GI parts (late 1991, early 1992 manuf).

Thanks for any helpful suggestions.

In the Army (M14) and with my own rifle in the 30+ years since (M1A) I've never had the gas plug so tight I couldn't just turn it loose with the GI cleaning kit tool. My gas cylinder is still tight on the barrel as the day I bought the rifle in 1978.

Oh, I ain't real stout either, big yeah, stout, no.

After reading about all the issues folks have with M1A, M1 Garands, 1911's, etc. I guess I've been really lucky over the years.

Use a large crescent wrench padded with leather. Look in my detailed disassembly video.

Thank you tonyben!!!!

The big crescent and leather I have.

I can borrow a torque wrench if you think it's necessary, but at 63, I doubt I would be over torquing anything.

Thanks again!
