I am was contemplating doing what you did but the thought of changing the gas volume might do something I would not be able to undo. When you recrowned the muzzle, did you just lap the existing crown with a "ball tip" and lapping compound or did you take the muzzle to 90 degrees and then cut a new recessed crown? I'm going to recrown the muzzle but haven't decided which way to go.....to cut a 11 degree crown and then burnish the bullet exit hole or just burnish the existing exit hole....the later would not change the gas volume ...assuming that I would stone the rear of the socom brake to remove the gap between the muzzle and the brake.

I only took a very little off of the face of the muzzle, just enough to get rid of the nicks and such. Then I just used a ball and lapping compound to smooth out the original crown. I tried to not deepen or change the angle of the original crown so, again, I took just enough off to have a nice clean crown.

the gap on one of my socoms measured .065 ...that is a lot of stoning!! I guessing that you could "time it" where it would also tighten the gas lock and ferrel where unitizing would be unnecessary... for that matter, shimming too?

I never measured mine before I started playing with it, ignorance is bliss ya' know. What's more, I had the gas cylinder shimmed before I started and ended up being able to remove the shims afterword. I suppose that the gap must not be uniform from rifle to rifle, it must be another one of those QA issues.
