Vermont City to confiscate guns

From Fox News:

It’s against state law to try to regulate guns in the Green Mountain State, but city officials here are looking at what may be a loophole.

Burlington wants to be able to confiscate and secure weapons for up to five days following a domestic dispute, and enact other restrictions.

City Councilman Norm Blais told Vermont Watchdog the council has the authority to pass new city gun regulations because of a single clause — “except as otherwise provided by law” — that proceeds the state law making the firearms regulations illegal in Vermont.

Blais was the first in the city to push for new gun laws after the December 2012 shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., left 26 people dead, 20 of them children.

“To those people who say we don’t need this legislation in Burlington because nothing like this has ever happened here before, well the people of Newtown, Conn. could have said that before Dec. (14),” Blais said during a City Council meeting earlier this year.

During that meeting, Blais proposed an amendment to Burlington’s charter that would have banned semi-automatic weapons and magazine clips capable of holding multiple rounds. But with that proposal, the Ward 6 councilman unleashed a furious debate that is far from settled.

Jackass commies like this are why we all need to be members of any or all of the pro gun lobby groups.

Texas passed a "confiscation" law too by these standards.
not domestic dispute though.

here if a leo feels you are mentally ill they can confiscate your guns untill you get a doctors letter saying your all better.

well see if it gets abused.

Vermont has indeed been taken over by leftist jerks who moved in from places like NY and MA. They moved there because it wasn't F--ed up and then did just that. It was one of the sadder things I've experienced there, watching it happen fairly quickly over maybe 20 years. There was a grass roots movement called Take Back Vermont, but they faded away. If nothing else, you could tell how the take over was progressing by the growing lack of courtesy on the roads.

I'm not so sure " They " are just moving in. " They " are just appearing like a cancer and spreading or more like a poisonous mushroom.

Wow when did LEO'S become doctors? I knew a few LEO'S when I was working who needed there badge and stuff stripped from them as they weren't mentally stable. Talk about totally wrong on several accounts. So if you get called to a house for a welfare check as family is worried about Dad after mom passed as they haven't heard from him. Cops get there and Dad is still depressed but says I'm fine just go away. Now what do you ask him if he owns any firearms? If he says no your done but if he says yes but go away now what? Do you force your way into the house for a warrantless search? What extenuating circumstances are there? The guys depressed? Can see this being abused beyond belief as ever since Heller and Mc Donald the 2nd amendment is a right and the only way a right can be taken is by due process 14th amendment.
So even if Dad is talking about martian death rays and how the NSA is spying on him ( whoops that might be true!) the only way to get his rights stripped is to have a hearing and most families in my experience even if you tell them how to do it ( court commitment papers) don't want to take the time. They want LEOS to wave a magic wand and make it all better in 5 minutes.
It's a fine line between taking care of the public and trampling someone's rights and IMHO that TX law is going to be thrown out.

Great now Texas, the way things seem to be going in the not so distant future if we want anything more than sharpened popsicle sticks we'll have to move to the Congo or some other third world s***hole.

It's not all doom and gloom though folks, at least they can have giggle switches on their boom sticks so we've got that to look forward to.

Actually, I'm quite surprised it took this long to happen in Vermont. This summer I attended an Appleseed bordering Vermont so I drove across just so my M1A could breathe in the freedom while it lasted.

What happens when they push too far?

What happens when the gun banners push too far?

What will they do if free people decide to tell them "no, we will not comply"? How, exactly, will they force the issue? At some point they will have gone just too far. I see that day on the horizon if not here already.
