Full-auto capability
Fires an intermediate cartridge
Shorter profile
High-cap magazines
Flash hider/supressor
Not to be confused with a battle rifle.

| If you could ask Able, it probably would have been a club When sticks and stones are outlawed.
Only Outlaws will have sticks and stones. |

Sturmgewehr (I'm not sure on the spelling-I'm pretty sure I've spelled it a few different ways) does mean "Assault Rifle" but only because it was for propaganda (Assault Rifle sounds better than Defense Rifle lol). In an ASSAULT, Germans could have anything from a StuG ASSAULT GUN to a Kar98k.
So as far as I know, an "assault" rifle is using assault just as a verb (or adverb at least). Hell, an "Assault Weapon" could be an antique cavalry sword! Those were used in ASSAULTS!

| We can convince each other of this line of reasoning....no problem. But we need to convince them, whoever "them" is, and now isn't the time to try, I think. The tragedy of those kids being killed is just too fresh. Reason hasn't come back into the discussion yet.
We should keep our heads, keep it down for awhile and work on a logical (and valid) reasoning to bring to the table. IMHO. |

the real definitions seem to have been covered, what has been left out is the definition that holds true for the media and the public that hear from them.
In this case an assault weapon is any firearm or firearm like device that can be misreported by the media to be an AK 47

And
And
To name a few.
