Marine faces 15 years behind bars for unknowingly violating gun law

Quote:
Ryan Jerome was enjoying his first trip to New York City on business when the former Marine Corps gunner walked up to a security officer at the Empire State Building and asked where he should check his gun.

That was when Jerome’s nightmare began. The security officer called police and Jerome spent the next two days in jail.

The 28-year-old with no criminal history now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of three and a half years in prison. If convicted, his sentence could be as high as fifteen years.

Jerome has a valid concealed carry permit in Indiana and visited New York believing that it was legal to bring his firearm. He was traveling with $15,000 worth of jewelry that he planned to sell.

The online gun-law information Jerome read was inaccurate, however, and his late September arrest initiated what may become a protracted criminal saga. He hasn’t yet been indicted by a grand jury, but there may be little legal wiggle-room if he is.

“If he does get indicted, and they want to give him something less, then the legal minimum would be two years,” noted Mark Bederow, Jerome’s attorney. “They couldn’t even offer less if they wanted to.”

Jerome isn’t the first out-of-state visitor to volunteer that they had a gun, only to be put through the wringer. In December, Tennessee nurse Meredith Graves noticed a “no guns” sign at the World Trade Center site and asked where she could leave her weapon, only to face similar charges.

I see stories like this way too often. Just don't bring a gun into a blue state.

Only the voters in New York can change that situation.

I help teach carry classes here in Iowa. One thing we emphasize over and over and over is your responsibility to know the law where you are traveling. Multiple sources of information are availible. Carry laws in this country are simply not consistent from state to state. I, like most, think New York's law is a crock, but it is the law.

so long as we allow them to violate the 2A with comments like 'oh well its the law' we will never have our RKBA intact

But for some the law is more important than Liberty, safety and rights so may your chains rest lightly

I will be raising a holy hell about this. The chains do not rest lightly upon my neck. Its time these tyrannical gun ordinances are cast aside as the detritus they are.

Calling my elected officials now.

I hate that there are anti-2nd Amendment spots like this in the U.S. as much as the next guy but morons like this should at least have the good sense to check the laws and then if they decide to carry anyway have the good sense to keep quiet.

Im gonna call all my Politicos. Whats worse is Heller v DC has affirmed the individual right to bear arms, this was clearly a case of him excercising his right to bear arms. Im tired of this side stepping of whats clearly written because someone hasnt stated it clear enough for all the idiots in Politics to understand

The Marine must have known that he was in the land of Hillary and Schumer. What could he have been thinking? Speaking of Hillary, Southwest Airlines is advertising that if anyone books with them, they get to take their bag for free. Has anyone told Bill?

My wife wants me to go to NYC with her next year.... she wonders why I don't want to go. Of all of the places that I would most certainly feel the need to be armed, it is one of the worst for gun owners.

That defense is going to go nowhere. This guy is coming off as a somewhat careless individual. I've never seen a site that states out of state permits are acceptable in NYC.

Incorrect. Plea bargains are made all the time requiring that number. Most recently the high profile case of Plaxico Burress who managed to shoot himself with his handgun. That plea was three months.

My advice is to stay the hell out of big cities like New York, NY, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA, Boston, MA, Baltimore, MD, Chicago,IL and Los Angeles, CA. They are run by Commocrat anti-gun tyrants and most of the people who live there are lamebrain sheep for voting them into office.

I know because I grew-up in Philadelphia, PA and live outside of Washington, DC. As far as I am concerned, they are not really part of America and do not believe in our Constitution. God help that poor Marine!

I would not support the city of New York with my money for anything. I would not go there on a bet. A lady from my city unintentionally took a pistol to the Birmingham air port and they found it in her purse. She'd forgotten to take it out before leaving home.

She was a school teacher and a graduate of one of my PD's firearms and self defense seminars so I wrote a letter on her behalf and she got out of it with a token fine. This was prior to 9/11, they'd probably hang her from the yardarm these days.

Good luck, I've had Senator Thune working on something for me for around two years and still no joy. All I asked him for was a road map to reclaiming my rights peacefully. Maybe his lack of help has to do with him knowing there is no peaceful way to do it.
