man, am I blessed

You know you're blessed when your wife wants a new conceal carry gun for Christmas. So we went to the LGS (a great mom and pop shop with a woman who knows more about handguns than most guys) and let Laura work with my wife to see what she wanted. We left with a new S&W bodyguard .380. Joyce (my wife) loves it. Went to the range a few days later and she put 75 rounds through the gun.

Now I find out she has ordered revolver and semi auto shaped cookie cutters from a group called Jew for the Preservation of Firearm Owners. The organization has, as a stated goal, to educate people to the necessity of responsible individuals being firearm owners. Here is a shot of her first "trip to the range" with the new cookie cutters (pun intended).

By the way, we also bought her a new rifle: a Ruger 10 / 22 compact with a black laminated stock, Nikon rimfire scope and sling swivels. A photo of that is attached, as well.

You are lucky.

How I wish my wife of 37 years would take more interest in weapons more than what's needed to stay proficient.

Yes indeed. However, we're fairly new to gun ownership--about five years. We own gun thanks to the fact I was afraid the current occupant of the white house would be elected. As a result, we started buying guns and ammo (haven't quit yet), got our conceal carry permits, etc. It's probably easier for people who have been around firearms longer to take them for granted, not see the need to practice, etc.

The little rifle is for an event named Appleseed. They're very cool rifle and history training events. My wife's only five feet tall and has a very short LOP, so we bought her the Ruger 10 22 compact so she can start shooting rifles.

Blessings,

Very proud of you and for you. Sorry that it took electing a foreign national to the white house to get you active, but really glad you are here. dave, life member of JPFO.

Skyraider:

Congrtulations on the new purchase, on the cookies and on a wife that has your ( and probably all good folks') backs.

Davecampperry:

Aaron Zelman of blessed memory and the JPFO have always done good work. Gd bless them. I do not know why everyone can not understand their simple message.

Happy New Year.

It's always refreshing to know that people appreciate how truly blessed they are. My blessings begin with a wife who reads and does her best to follow Holy Scripture from a non-revisionist Bible. When disputes arise, we both acknowledge that as the supreme authority and it keeps us literally on the same page. She also has concealed carry and isn't a bad shot. Among our kids (ages 33-42), the girls think her CCW is terrible while our son is completely supportive. My spouse thinks my M-14's are handsome and if I trade something off and get seller's remorse, I get no sympathy. She has always gotten along well with my Marine buddies and their wives and appreciates the importance of that institution. Life isn't all basket leave and paydays but do I feel blessed? You bet!

Benlee,

We had never heard of those books until several of them arrived with the cookie cutters. They are amazingly informative--definitely something everyone in our society should read.

And Willriskit, you are absolutely correct. My Heavenly Father--revealed through His inspired Word and His Son (also called the Word)--is the basis of our lives, as well.

Have a terrific week,

Paul

p.s. I'm fairly new to this forum, but have enjoyed it immensely. The members are willing to share information, engage in dialog, and seem genuinely interested in helping each other.

Yes sir, you are a blessed man, as am I. It was my wife that drug me to our first Appleseed, now we're both instructors. Get her to a seed, you can sneek down to Baja Co. (NM) if need be, we'd love to have you....O.L.

She's a keeper!

There is nothing better than when your sweetie takes an interest. While we were dating my wife of 23 years helped me place 50lb Rams at 225 yards on a private club range we had to ourselves. Then she spotted for me until I hit one with a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 colt.

My biggest problem with her is her good taste. Get her a handgun, ok but only a Colt Python will do. Shotgun, fine "this one is nice." It should be honey It's a Browning. You get the drift.

Butzbach, you are absolutely correct. I wouldn't have anyone else (no-one else would take me, anyway!!!). We are committed to each other for the long haul, and it's been 23 years and counting.

Xsail, I'll check the Appleseed site for NM events and see if we can swing one down there. We are already talking about meeting up with davecampperry and his grandson to attend one, and have considered attending an appleseed at the Whittington Center.

My wife's Ruger is perfect for an Appleseed. I'm still using an old Remington tube loader semi automatic 552 speedmaster that was manufactured in 1959 (old steel and wood is about all I own). I've decided--for now--that I want to get good enough toqualify with the Speedmaster. That will be a challenge!!!

Paul, the spring schedule won't be up for awhile for most states, just have to keep checking. Might check with "TaosGlock" on the Appleseed forum, he's got a handle on the goings on at Whittington. Old wood and steel...Nothing wrong with that! :) Lever guns and bolt actions can qual too so a tube fed semi isn't a handicap other than being a PIA to load. Make sure it's clean and reliable. Makeing some speed loaders from arrow shafts helps....O.L.

The handicap isn't the gun as much as the operator. I've only been shooting rifles for about 8 months and have LOTS to learn. One of the reasons I'm getting involved in Appleseed.

On a sidenote...the weekend before Christmas we went to the range and took my M1 carbine. A peep sight is more difficult for me than good old leaf and post sights. It's difficult for me to determine whether the front site is centered in the peep, making consistency difficult in regards to the sight picture. Military style adjustable sights similar to the Garand and Carbine are what Appleseed seems to recommend, but they're hard for me to use. Any ideas?

The Colorado state coordinator is an acquaintance of mine. I'll call him and see if he has any idea of what the 2012 schedule will be.

Paul

I was the same way Paul, hated the peep/military styled sights. Until I practiced with them and got the hang of it. All that rear peep does is gets your cheek weld in the same place. Your eye has a natural tendency to center things, therefore focus your eye balls on that front sight and don't worry much about the rear. If you're off by much, you won't see the front sight! :) The common logic is for those visually challenged to use a larger rear peep..Reality is the opposite, go to a smaller one. Again FOCUS on that front sight and center it in the blurry fuzz called a target. If there is a fly speck on that front sight, you should see it clearly.

Leaf sights, some are better than others and over 50 years of shooting, some I could be more consistant with than others, but NONE are as consistant as good military peeps. The factory 10-22 sights suck! :)

Nothing wrong with scopes in Appleseed, reality is for those who can shoot irons, a scope is no benefit at all other than for target detection. Type of sight has nothing to do with how much you wiggle therefore scope groups and iron groups will be no different.

On a different subject, for your wife, that compact 10-22. Every bodies geometry is different but I'd bet the scope is mounted too far aft. Get her down in the prone or sitting position, have her close her eyes and get comfortable with the rifle with a good cheek weld. Have her open her eyes and see which way she has to move to have a clear field. She should have a clear view in the scope with no shadows or tunnel from too close or too far eye relief. If she has to scooch up or back up to get a clear field, move the scope either through the rings or mount until it's a natural fit. Her being small, it might be OK but if the stock length of pull is close to correct, the scopes typically have the eye piece about even above the rear of the receiver. Taking a little time to "fit" the rifle to the person is time well spent, especially ladies and kids.

The next problem you are likely to have is she might take to this like a duck to water and be kicking your tail. Seen it over and over, the guys strutting around trying to see who can pee higher on the tree and a girl walks in, cuts the tree down and pees on the top!....O.L.

Xsail, thanks for the terrific info. And I hope she does kick my tail!!! Nothing would make me happier, because she would be ecstatic!!!

Let me play with the peep sight thing a little. You've been shooting much longer than I, so you are obviously correct. It will just take a little getting used to. By the way, if I do build a LTR for Appleseed, it won't be a Ruger 10 / 22--it will be a Remington 795. There's a guy who's supposedly finishing a nice wood stock for a 795. I first requested it the beginning of November and haven't heard from him in awhile.

We'll play with Joyce's position holding the 10 / 22 using your suggestions and see what happens with the scope position.

Thanks,

Paul Moore
