M249

So who here has trigger time behind the M249?

Today was my first live fire with the weapon out at camp bullis, TX. It was about 40 degrees, pouring rain and high winds when we got to the range. As miserable as we all were no one walked away without a grin and a hard on (well, minus the females in our team).
I was honestly suprised at how accurite this thing was despite the fact it already had 2100 rounds through it by the time I got to the line.

I hope there were some barrel changes in there somewhere. I've got plenty of trigger time on the SAW. Not as robust as it could be but it's not too bad. I prefer its big brother, M240B.

Thanks from Whatsinaname181 and heyjowee

True.. I prefer the 240B as well, but the 249 can lay down some rounds.

The 249 is a great weapon, I always took alittle pride in humping it around. Throw a collapsible but stock and a short barrel on it and you become one bad mofo clearing a building.

The 240 is a great support weapon but the 249 has a role that the 240 could never fill.

I enjoy shooting the SAW, although as a lefty my right arm takes a beating from spent brass. The ones the reservists had in Djibouti were not in great shape and were missing some modifications, but without a doubt the most ragged out SAW I've seen belonged to FAST Co. from Bahrain. There are no telling how many rounds went through that gun before I saw it! The M240B will always be my choice though, just a solid reliable weapon and Marine proof.

Yea, it was the standard 200 round barrel change rules. We went out and shot the M240 today. I'm still grinning ear to ear.

I have some pretty considerable time behind the M249. Liked them better when they had the skeletal stock and no upper hand guard, but the new colapsable stock is OK too. I do like the folding barrel changing handle as well. One of the best improvements to it as far as I'm concerned is the "nut sack" ammo bags. Beats the rattle of the plastic drum any day.

Got sometime behind the Belgian version....the original FN MiniMi, including the Para version. Great gun to lay down some 5,56mm rounds at high rate.

Loved the bipods....it once get me out of a foxhole. I was so tired that I couldn't climb out. I just used the gun to pull me out.

On the other hand, I once lost the barrel of the machine gun while firing.

The range master :
"Ready ?"
Me:
"Ready !"
The range master:
"Go !"

I shouldered the MiniMi, and pressed the trigger. No fire.
"Damn, jammed !" I unshouldered the gun, slammed the feed tray cover and recocked the weapon...Then I realized that something was missing on the front of the firearm...
On the ground were the barrel, the unfired round and the link.

The rangemaster:
"muhahahahaha....I have never seen that wuhahahaha".

Sometimes, I feel very alone...

Very used gun...retaining lugs were out-of-specs.

I humped the M249 back in the late 80s. Man, that thing had some sharp edges and they let you know they were there, especially on a road march!

That barrel would sure get hot! Heated mine up purty good in a live fire down in Honduras.

in iraq i carried the older full length version of the SAW with no rail system etc... basic national guard weapon.

when active duty in afghanistan i had the paratrooper skeleton stock with the short barrel, a nutsack and an extra EOTech. made a hell of a weapon.

i was a MP driver both deployments. this is a beeatch to pull in and out through the drivers door but when its necessary, its a comfortable weapon to have on your side.

i too prefer the 240B as long as i dont have to hump it around. our gunners had them mounted from time to time.

Yea I carried one in the first go around in the sand box. They were fun to shoot. I had a buddy of mine blow the end of his finger off when a miss fire cooked off while he was trying to extract it out of the chamber with his fingernail. The do get hot!!!!!

Sounds like you have the wrong females in your unit, ours walk away with a smile especially after doing as well on the qualification as any of the males.

I've had pleny of time behind our version of the SAW since my compulsory service back in 1993/1994.
Over here they are called Ksp90 and Ksp90B, the "B" version is the PARA model. They have recently started to issue the "C" version which have a railed handguard.

I love it!

I'm carried in Kosovo and Afghanistan and i'd rather have the SAW then a rifle.

Here's a fun day in Kosovo back in 2009 i think?

This got me messed up:

Me in Afghanistan in 2010, west of Masar-e-Sharif.

My precious..

I modified it with Savit buttstock, Knight's handguard etc. GREAT modifications, which got me hammered when i got back home... couldn't care less, made me work that gun so much better.

Love it! :D

When we switched to short barrels the damn 249's would always jam up. Lots of issues but we eventually sorted them.

I like the 249 but the 240B is a much better weapon IMO. During a company live fire I've seen 249's going down left and right while the 240B's just keep rockin through hundreds of rounds.

All that said I'm never opposed to firing off a bucket of rounds from the hip, Rambo style

I've been behind a M249 quite a few times, I have to agree that I like the M240B better. The M249 seemed to have more issues jamming especially if using a magazine instead of a porkchop.
I've seen the barrel shoot off before, sometimes new shooters forget to lock it in when they change barrels, or the lock gets damaged or fouled, doesn't happen often though.
With the M240L (lightweight) coming out I wonder if the M249 is going to be around much longer...
