| Bump fire fun times
Ok guys, i used to be a machine gunner. M240's, PKMs, RPK's, MG03's, you name it. Ive got a lot of rounds downrange. I miss those times. I get the itch sometimes, so ive gotten really damn good at bumpfiring my AK74 from a bipod. Its like shooting an RPK for real. I can put 6-9 round bursts on target at 600 meters effectevly.
Heres my question. i have a bulgarian NDS-2 AK74. I think when it she starts running hot, she starts keyholing. hell, some of my rounds arent even making it to the 100 meter target it seems, sometimes. When shes cold, no problem.
I dont think ive burned out the barrel on her. hell, ive literally set AK's on fire before and they were ok. Im trying to figure out what the problem is here. The barrel appears to be chrome lined. The max ive put through her at one time, "cyclic" was about 3-4 magazines. thats nothing for an AK pattern rifle.
anyone else have problems? she never used to do this. im wondering whats wrong. im pretty sure its not a barrel diameter issue.
*oh yeah, and im firing N76 53gr russian surplus.

Maybe something to do with the muzzle brake?

Ham, I was kind of thinking the same thing actually... Ill do some testing with it without the brake. this ol' girl is getting pretty hot. Still being pretty nice to her though. Pop the BCG out and lay her up right to get some air in the barrel.
Gawd, you should see it though! its so much fun, and the sounds... brings me back. Good cone of fire, 6-9 rnd bursts. Sustained ROF. Fire, echo, delay... impact. Theres something special about an MG crew at work... My buddy used to be an MG gunner too, we were really putting some rounds downrange yesterday.

LOL, sounds like a great time man, I wish I lived closer - That would be some good fun to watch!
I was always brought up to believe that an AK can take a hell of a beating. I treat mine well, it's a lowly WASR-10, that I've only had out a couple of times (spends most of its time in the safe) - but my buddy has one, that he treats like a tire iron.. You know, shoots the hell out of it, lubes it with motor oil, throws it in the back of his truck.. Just a total lack of respect for the weapon, and it still goes bang.. I couldn't bring myself to do that to a rifle, but it did earn my respect from that..
Now, he of course treats his SOCOM like a princess. Something about dropping $400, vs $1600 will do that to someone, I suppose.. lol
I've wanted to get a '74, everything I've seen on them says they're supposed to be really good, and more accurate than the WASR.. On the other hand, they say that there is no domestic production for the 5.45 ammo for them, so to sit on a pallet of ammo for them, in case the baloon goes up on the Russian ammo for them..
It'll be interesting to know why yours is keyholing. If the barrel is GTG, then the only other thing that I could think of (unless you got some bad ammo) would be the brake..

yeah, im pretty sure 4000 rounds will not even touch a bulgarian 5.45 chrome lined barrel. im hoping its just something with the brake/rapid firing/heat or something. the lands and grooves look sharp. you can fire these things for 50,000 rounds +
BTW my WASR 10 can blast 3-400 meter 12'' steel plates about 4 out of 5 times- AND its an underfolder. Nothing lowly about that rifle. It does what its supposed to do very well.

You said the rifle is a "NDS-2 AK74" if your referring to a Century built rifle (Bulgy parts kit on a NDS rec) it does NOT have an original Bulgy barrel..... Century used US made barrels on these rifles... unlike the older Century built Tantals these are quality C/L barrels & from my limited experience i found them to be very accurate

That's good to know on your WASR, when I was fiddling with mine, it seemed that I couldn't hit the broad side of a rock quarry with it.. That's exaggerating, but I was trying to hit a regular sized target at 100 and was having trouble landing the rounds on paper.. Cold, warm, didn't really seem to matter. My Russian SKS had no trouble at all with the same ammo. I realize that it's not exactly a fair comparison, but I bought both of them just as fun, cheap to shoot rifles, so the accuracy on them was kind of secondary to me..
Also, trying to lock a magazine into the WASR is kind of a PITA for me, do you have trouble with yours?
Hm, all this talk about them is making me want to go home and fondle mine for a little while..

One thing i learned a long time ago is that kalashnikovs are not bench rifles. Honestly, i cant shoot for crap from a bench with an AK, but if i get up off the bench and take up a decent supported or unsupported firing position- any position, i can hit that same target more often than not.
If shes a little tight, get you a file and open up that well a hair. mines actually a tad loose- no issues though.
