Or, you could keep a couple of mags fully loaded and switch them around on a regular schedule. Depending on the age of the mags, meaning the date of manufactor, I would adjust the turn-around time accordingly (I have the idea that the metals used for springs are better now than they were in the early 20th century- unless perhaps they come from China or some place similar).

Similar query but NOT for the BAR

I was going to post a related query: I load mags two rounds below capacity for the following weapons, then switch them out to other magazines every two months: M14, M16, UZI, Swedish K, M3 Guide Lamp, Auto-Ord Thompson, HK MP5, and Inglis Bren.

I keep five mags for each ready to go.

I haven't had any problems and am hoping not to have any. Does anyone see this procedure as asking for trouble?

Yep I do the same. And I did the same in Iraq. If my magazines werent empty after about tow weeks (Ooh Rah TICs) id un-load the combat load, and load up new magazines.

All springs will take a set. rotate every once in awhile I have 37 years with the 45 my bed room hide gun was a Combat Comander didn't see day light for Two years. Spring took a set and would feed three rounds then not enough power for the fourth. Ask a Smith if an M14 can be stored action locked open for long term storage.

compression isnt what wears out the spring, its the cycling between compressed and uncompressed, the only concern for long term storage would be the feed lips, they can deform eventually, that said you should be fine for a while
