M16 - the original green rifle?

Got in an argument over this but can't turn up a final answer- my memory is that at least some of the original M16s issued were green (olive drab) in color as opposed to black, possibly green while still designated as AR15s. Am I crazy or is my friend misinformed as usual?

{Oops,, this came out in wrong forum I guess, but don't know how to change it...

Actually the originals where brown. Then the Brown furniture was painted green. Eventually black.

The M16A1 I was issued in basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC was stamped GM Hydramatic Division on the lower receiver (left side of the mag. well) and was greenish in color (the metal parts) vs. the darker gray/black parkerizing on some of the other M16's. It also still had the 3 prong flash suppressor. This was in 1975.

I know that some parkerized finishes can take on a different color due to exposure to various solvents and lubricants.

I've also seen normally black fiberglass handguards on older rifles take on a grey/green cast to them from exposure to sunlight.

I fired an FN built IDF FAL at a MG shoot that had handguards like that.
